Hi - these are suggestions/feature requests for the Boxee Box app (presumably people would want similar things in the Boxee app running on other platforms as well).

1 - Ability to see a list of things I've marked "favorites", preferably the ability to add and remove favorites via the app as well, but at the very least the ability to pull up the list and go to the page of videos for a favorite by selecting it. For example, I am currently watching the original 42 episodes of Captain Harlock. To get to it within the Boxee Box app, I have to click the Anime tab, click over to list all by alphabet, click across the screen to get to the alphabet list and click down to "C", click back over to the center to navigate to Captain Harlock..seems a little cumbersome if I've gone to the trouble to mark something as a favorite.
2 - Ability to track "watched" episodes. See note 1 where I was talking about watching Captain Harlock? There are 42 episodes. Every time I come back into the list, they are all listed by episode number (descending) so I have to scroll down to the episode I want to watch, and there is nothing to indicate I have already watched any particular episode. Would be nice to have some way of marking them.
3 - I know this has been addressed/discussed before, but for those anime where higher resolutions are available, I'd like to be able to view them that way on Boxee. I bought the Box, and I bought a premium membership to Crunchyroll, and I'd like to be able to get the full value from both.

Note that for me at least, running on the actual Boxee Box, I am not having technical problems with the Crunchyroll app - it works. Thanks for your consideration!

BTW, I also noticed something that does need fixing in the Boxee app - after clicking on the Anime tab, along the left-hand side there are several menus of sorting criteria - Newest episodes, list by alphabet, list by season, etc. Near the bottom is a menu whose title suggests it is going to let you list by Genre, but instead it has a list of seasons like the menu above it. Would be nice to have the actual Genre listings.

Thanks!

Thanks for making this thread, I came here this morning to do just that...

Anyway, I second gravygoat's concern: 1. Please bring the Watch List to the Boxee Box. 2. Please build a last episode/history tab so I know what ep I last watched in a given series. Regarding #3, video on my Boxee Box appears to be playing at 720p. I based this assumption* on a problem I have been having with the app which takes me to my request:

Double Please: Do something about the Autoplay feature. A quick fix would be allowing users to turn off autoplay on all videos in the same manner that users control their default video preference via the account settings on the site. However, what would be even better, is the ability to control autoplay on-screen while using the app. Here is the problem with how things work now:
1. Video ends. 2. Screen goes black and gives next episode countdown. 3. New video starts in background. 4. Screen jumps and video can be partially seen playing in non fullscreen web browser window. 5. User is unable to control the new video playback and the Boxee must be restarted.

I realize this is partially Boxee's problem, because of how the device grabs video, but it could be easily remedied by creating a universal off switch in preferences for the Autoplay.

Recap: Autoplay - fix or make an off switch. Watch list needs to be added to the app. Viewing History of some sort needs to be added.

* To start, the video quality on the Boxee has been phenomenal for me. Anyhow, as stated above, because of the autoplay problem I can see the web browser running in the background and that is how I am able to tell what video quality CR is sending to my TV. Also, my TV shows it is receiving a 720p (when applicable) signal, so for me it's twice verified.

Submitted to Boxee Jira BOXEE-7368 (case http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-7368).

Build number: 1.0.1.16489 (Not 1.0.01.16468)
App: Crunchyroll
Specific video: Fortune Arterial
Subtitles: Not enabled by default in playback.
Boxee Box Subtitles: enable subtitles button is unchecked

Repeatable? Yes.

Specific circumstances:

During video playback, hit enter to bring up menu.
Settings>Click enable subtitles
Unit then restarts itself.
This happens either when playing or paused.

Contrast with:

App: Crunchyroll:
Specific video: The World God Only Knows
Subtitles: Enabled by default in playback.
Boxee Box Subtitles: enable subtitles button is unchecked

Repeatable? Yes

If you pause playback, then click the enable subtitles button the unit then stops playback and takes you back to the movie menu. The unit then displays the following message: "Player action currently not supported." If you attempt the same while the unit is playing (not paused), the unit will then restart itself.

Edited to add case #.

Boxee users could definitely use the addition of the watchlist and/or favorites; that is, a video queue would be helpful. The following are some problems with the app:

- Autoplay feature is not compatible.
- Anime shows are not sorted by Genre, instead the Seasons are listed twice.
- "New Episodes" does not list new episodes.
- The "featured" series is too long.
- There's no button available that allows a user to return to the video being watched without either first having to close the app and use the standard built-in Boxee "Now Playing" tab or reload the video. EDIT 5/22/2011: Apparently this is only noteworthy for the dated HTPC version; when the setting to pause video after exiting playback is not selected.
- Can't quickly jump to different scenes in video. EDIT 5/22/2011: No longer an issue with the new OSD seek bar in BB version 1.1.
- And... yeah, well let's just start with that for now.

Would be much appreciated.

Figured out a workaround. If you decrease the resolution of the Boxee Box to 720p, the video doesn't stutter.

The Crunchyroll app on Boxee doesn't seem to work at all for me. When I try a play the episode I get the still preview image full screen and audio, but no video. Tried with both hardware acceleration and software rendering.

Edit: It seems like some shows work and some shows don't. Naruto and Mainichi Kaasan both work. But when I try to play a Durarara episode it just shows me the Crunchyroll website.

Hmm... dunno about the regular boxee version. Using Boxee Box it seems to work- just ran "Out of Your Control". Couldn't find anything on JIRA. Have you submitted a bug report?

Edit, Post can be summed up as: The "new" anime additions from Kadokawa do not recognize Anime Member status on Boxee.

Maburaho episodes 5-21 (eps. 22-24 work) do not play and episodes 1-4 are showing advertisements even though I'm logged in. Will check to see if any of the other new Kadokawa shows are having the same issues... and will update post if necessary.

Updates:
- Cosplay Complex OVA, all videos will not play. Instead they send us to Crunchyroll's mature content advisory page asking us to log in to view the videos, but this is not possible. I was already logged in on Boxee.
- Good Luck! Ninomiya-kun, eps. 1-3 have ads and the rest do not play.
- H2O Footprints in the Sand, eps. 1-3 have ads and the rest do not play.
- Kiddy GiRL-AND, eps. 1-6 have ads and the rest do not play.
... I'm not going to bother checking the rest of the "new" Kadokawa shows. Going to assume they either don't work or have ads.

12/29/2010 Update: They appear to be working now. Thank you!

Hello guys!

I finally got my box today for Christmas and I have somewhat of a work around for these issues.

Someone suggested that the resolution on the Boxee Box be set to 720p and that it would eliminate or reduce stutter, it works. I have my box set at 720p and I have tested both the application and CR using he web browser the box has.

Here are my impressions:

The application doesn't appear to play 720p capable videos from CR using the application. It'll play them at 480p and this is even if you have your settings set to automatically play at 720p. However, video seems to play well without any issues regardless (at 720p resolution on the box).

If you use the browser and go directly to the website, you are able to play 720p quality videos. It plays perfectly fine except for one issue. I find that when I play the video in full screen it'll have a vertical-black bar appear on to bottom right of the screen. I have confirmed that this issue can occur on other sites when a video is widened to full screen (I tested it looking at a video from The Daily Show and it replicates the black bar issue).

Therefore, this appears to be an issue the boxee box has its self. I'm not sure if it has been brought up or if I'm just an isolated incident as I haven't found any info on this issue being brought up on their forums. I guess I'll just have to submit a report on that.

That said, I hope either problem with the application or the browser are fixed. I highly doubt many will like to see their favorite anime at 480p on a high resolution television... it's a waste.

Thanks for the info. I actually thought that this has been fixed already but I haven't tried.

This problem of not being able to play 720p correctly is what's holding me and a few friends back from subscribing to Crunchyroll premium....

Hopefully it's fixed soon.

I edited the python file for Crunchyroll by hand and managed to add 720p support back since it seems Boxee has no interest in adding back the option to have alternate streams. Currently I just added an option to try forcing it to play in HD because for some reason when it tries to retrieve available resolutions all it gets back is "12" for SD but not 20 or 21 for HD and 480p.

Considering it's possible to get HD working again I think it's really up to Crunchyroll to create a work-around, either by having a dialog pop-up asking if you want it in HD or by creating a custom UI. It's not worth waiting for Boxee to add that API option back when it can easily be worked around.

KalenXI how did you change the python script. I up until recently watched crunchyroll using the boxee browser app as I could select HD. A recent change to the boxee browser app makes it freeze when trying to access crunchyroll and the crunchyroll app still plays SD. I would appreciate assistance in getting back to HD for crunchyroll.
