Kenichi Matsuyama confirmed as star of 2012 taiga drama
A couple weeks ago, rumors surfaced that actor Kenichi Matsuyama (25) had been chosen to star in NHK's 2012 taiga drama, "Taira no Kiyomori." The network confirmed that on Thursday with an official press conference announcing Matsuyama as the show's star.
This will be Matsuyama's first appearance in one of NHK's taiga dramas. As previously reported, the series will revolve around the life of the 12th century general Taira no Kiyomori, responsible for the Taira clan's rise to power. Although Taira no Kiyomori has traditionally been portrayed as a villain, his character will be depicted differently in this drama.
The series is scheduled to premiere in January 2012, though filming is expected to start next summer.

Hiroshi Tamaki to play Kenichi Matsuyama's rival in "Taira no Kiyomori"
Just a few days ago, it was confirmed that Kenichi Matsuyama (25) will be the star of NHK's 2012 taiga drama, "Taira no Kiyomori." It was then revealed yesterday that Hiroshi Tamaki (30) will be joining him, playing Matsuyama's rival.
Matsuyama will play the general Taira no Kiyomori, who led the Taira clan to power during the 12th century. Tamaki will play Minamoto no Yoshitomo, who became head of the Minamoto clan. Although the two were on the same side during the Hogen Rebellion in 1156, they later fought against each other during the Heiji Rebellion in 1159. Kiyomori's victory led to the downfall of the Minamoto clan and Yoshitomo's ultimate death.
Although Matsuyama has never appeared in a taiga drama before, Tamaki has previously appeared in two: "Komyo ga Tsuji" in 2006 and "Atsuhime" in 2008.
NHK will begin broadcasting "Taira no Kiyomori" in January 2012.

Takahashi Ai & five more actors join the cast of ‘Taira no Kiyomori’
NHK has just announced the latest six additions to the cast of their current taiga drama ‘Taira no Kiyomori‘ starring Matsuyama Kenichi as Kiyomori.
The most interesting addition must be that of former Morning Musume member Takahashi Ai, who is also going to be the first ever Hello! Project idol to appear in a taiga drama. It’s Takahashi’s first regular role since she graduated from the idol group last September with the mindset to focus more on her acting career.
In the drama, she is going to play the role of Fujiwara no Ienari’s (Sato Jiro) fourth-born daughter Keishi/Tsuneko, who will also become the wife of Kiyomori’s eldest son Shigemori, played by Kubota Masataka. Kiyomori’s second son Motomori will be played by Watabe Gota, while Nakagawa Taishi is going to portray the young Minamoto no Yoritomo. All four of them are going to make their first appearance in the drama on June 17th.
The other two new additions are Tomiura Satoshi as Emperor Nijo (first appearance on June 24th) and Ukaji Takashi as Minamoto no Yorimasa (first appearance on July 1st).
