Although many people don't even realize it, smell does attract or deter people. What smell(s) specifically depends on the individual, environment, and even mood. In some cases, not having much fragrance may be more beneficial than something more overtly obvious. Something as simple as a scented hand sanitizer or scented lip / chap stick can do the trick just as well or better than hair or perfume products.

For example, it's fairly easy for a guy to overdose on cologne. I'm sure you can find many who would agree on this. However, let's say it's a hot and humid summer day, with a small downpour outside making most things fairly damp. A subtle sweet smell, like vanilla or cake as was suggested earlier in the thread might be good if you're inside in a warm cozy environment, but if there's a pet that was left out in the rain, wet dog + sweet can = gag, whereas just wet dog = annoying, but more tolerable (at least in my book).

Furthermore, sometimes you have to take health considerations into effect. People around you could have allergens to hair product chemicals. People with Asthma can actually have some dangerous negative reactions from an overuse of hair spray and/or perfume in excess depending on severity of the condition and potency of chemical(s). Even if you plan to be around someone later, smelling great, beware of the innocent bystanders that in extreme cases may need to be rushed to the hospital (yes, it can happen).

Lastly, play to what you know. If you have a specific guy (or girl) you're interested in, asking what kind of fruit they like (or don't like, if you want to avoid), or food, or spice, or whatever (outside of perfume / fragrance / etc topics specifically), and then specifically what it is they like about whatever they answer will lead to better results without being as obvious (until you apply the fragrance, and/or they remember the convo).

On a side note, I heard on a news program that women's tears have a testosterone-reducing effect on guys. There was a controlled scientific study done where guys were given a small piece of damp fabric with tears collected from women who watched or experienced a sad event. With nothing else, there was a reduction of testosterone and the men seemed calmer and/or more solemn than when tested before the experiment. Just thought that was kind of interesting.

Aaaaaaaaaaand, noted. Calvin Klein beauty, eh?

I am a big fan of some sort of mango one I had... peach-mango maybe. I also really love my sweet pea body wash, body spray, and lotion.

I think that whatever soap, body wash, deodorant, and shampoo/conditioner should be light, fresh, and plenty enough most of the time.
I don't like people that smell so strongly that I feel like I sprayed myself in the face with perfume/cologne.

I like (on other girls) fruits, cotton candy, sweet smells, sometimes spices although not too strong. I don't know exactly what this universal cake smell is that everyone seems to know and love. I'm not fond of the musk smell, my mom had a few perfumes of those.

Interesting! I think I shall be looking into this. I've heard guys say a variety of things about how girls crying effects them. Hmmm...

Also, wow... I had never put that much thought into what I smell like in comparison to the environment.

It depends on the guy. I myself like "fruity" scents the best. One piece of advice you shouldn't ignore though: whatever scent you pick, don't put on too much. Too much perfume just makes a guy want to get a breath of fresh air.

And while we are on the topic of scents, while it is true that scents can affect a person's behavior, there is a myth being propagated by various companies. Namely this myth is that pheromones in a perfume or body spray can be used to attract girls/guys. This is blatantly false. Humans don't have pheromones. To be blunt, humans do not use scent to broadcast (or induce) receptiveness to mating. Sure, there are plenty of claims about sweat containing pheromones - but none of these claims have been verified by peer reviewed studies. The fact of the matter is that if there IS some sort of human pheromone out there, its effects are negligible.

This isn't to say that people can't find a scent attractive - it just means that this attraction isn't based on some sort of chemical compulsion consistent throughout the entire human species.
