I think it's fine to communicate manga with words such as, graphic novels, comic books, tankōbons, Japanese comics, books, BD (Bandes dessinées), and etc. If we want to look at it more closely the Japanese word for "comic" is "manga" edit: added Japanese comic

They're part of the big family I guess, but I think there's something we've missed. In my opinion, manga has been redefined as Japanese graphical novels while comic books still retain its original meaning, or at least that's how I view them both. By original, I mean comedy artwork in the form of comic strips.
