One piece is around halfway done according to Oda. Op has sold around 230 million all time in Japan. I cant see it taking more than 3-4 years to over take Dragonballs worldwide sales with its Japanese sales. Op sold around 32 mil in 2010. Even if nobody outside of Japan has ever heard of One Piece its just a matter of time. Having said that no question that outside of Japan no series will ever be as popular as Dragonball is. Dragonball has sold around 150 mil in Japan so it is just as popular outside of Japan. These numbers refer to books sold not money for the record. Just for some perspective on how stuff does out side of Japan the biggest US Manga publisher Viz sold around 4.8 mil in 2009. I don't know what last years sales were but i am guessing they are down considering Viz laid off 40% of its staff. Manga outside of Japan was really booming for a number of years while falling in popularity in Japan. Unfortunately as of like 2008 it took a big drop.

has nothing to do with overall sales. This is (I'm assuming, there's more than one top book selling list...) the New York Times best sellers list.

I note this based on the list having TWO SETS OF NUMBERS. The first number is the list ranking AMONG MANGA. The second number is the position that something was on the full unfiltered list.

Overall sales would include all sales of all time. Not all purchases within a specific set of retailers within a certain time period.

Current best-seller comics on Amazon Japan:

1. ONE PIECE 64 (Jump Comics)
2. To LOVE-Ru - Trouble - Darkness 3 (Jump Comics)
3. Yotsubato! 11 (DC)
4. To Aru Majutsu no Index Gaiden To Aru Kagaku no Railgun 7 (DC)
5. Minamike 9 (Yanmaga KC Special)
6. NARUTO 58 (Jump Comics)
7. Saint ☆ Oniisan 7 (Morning KC)
8. Minamike 9 [Limited Edition with CD] (Young Magazine Comics)
9. Sonna mirai wa uso dearu 2 (KC Deluxe)
10. Hayate the Combat Butler! 31 [Special Edition with Movie DVD]

So this is another fairly meaningless list, but it's still interesting IMO. (Translation and typos by me.)

One Piece is a pretty bad show.
Dragonball is untouchable, sales or not. The thing about One Piece catching up to Dragonball in Japan sales alone is that Japan has a pretty large population and THE SAME people keep buying One Piece in japan month after month.

Theres a reason why Dragonball has survived for 20+ years and One Piece only does well in it's home country.
