There was a clown when I was a kid growing up in South Boston who gave little kids stamps with acid on the back so when kids licked em they got messed up! Besides, even as a mom, a good one, I got a problem with ANYONE who wants 2 disguise their identity and spend all day with kids!! I mean COME ON! THEY SCARE THE BEJESUS OUTTA ME!!!!

People are afraid of clowns because they are "in your face" and have an overwhelming appearance.
This makes you feel like you can't get away from them so it's a sort of "clown haunting."

EDIT: I just realized this isn't a picture of a clown. It's a mime.

They never give a serious answer.

No, it's a clown.
The picture is just black and white.

There was a similar topic before so I'll just quote myself.

John Wayne Gacy, Jr. (March 17, 1942 – May 10, 1994) was an American serial killer also known as the Killer Clown who committed the rape and murder of 33 teenage boys and young men between 1972 and 1978. Twenty-six of Gacy's victims were buried in the crawlspace of his home, three others elsewhere on his property and four victims were discarded in a nearby river.

Gacy became known as the "Killer Clown" due to his charitable services at fundraising events, parades and children's parties where he would dress as "Pogo the Clown," a character he devised himself.

Who wouldn't be afraid of that?

google'd "clowns" and that was the first image--it's not made to be scary but tell me that doesn't look like a possible psychopath--

or the way they talk and behave-- hiiIIII kids *wide grin* OMFG HELP ME MAHMEHHHHH

also the laughter is borderline maniacal

look at those beady, little eyes-- they're scheming something horrible

ah, Bozo... you evil, evil man--
but when I was a kid I used to like watching the animated version of Bozo, the live one gave me nightmares

and of course there are variations that aren't scary, but the majority keeps me from sleeping soundly at night

Brrr. There are alot of killers and etc who dress up as clowns or etc to hide their identity.

Also, I watched Stephen King's IT when I was 3. Yeah, mindfuck for life.
Waaait a second.

I also watched George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (original) but I aint afraid of zombies...But I am afraid of clowns. WTF?

Probably just in my head. I'm a grade-a idiot.

Well ppl always look at the bad instead of the good... there are some good funny clowns (or seemingly harmless), like Krusty the Clown and Dr. Rockso

I believe it has something to do with the idea of someone hidding their identity behind a mask. (Because the face is the identity.)
In general we like to be able to tell who an other person are, seeing the face creates a sense of trust which makes us feel secure.
If we are unable to see the other persons face, the person behind the mask gets an advantage, and that type of situation feels threatening to alot of people, they feel as if they are at the mercy of this faceless person.

It isn't socially acceptable for a person to hide their identity (robbers, kidnappers, etc) but if you're a clown suddenly it becomes okay and aslo they're making fun off it.
