Cartoons have to appeal to children, and children these days are terrible and don't care for storyline. So there you have it, from a true child.

It pains me just by reading this.

DAMN GENERATION!!!! D:<

Your generation or my generation? Because half of it was during your generation, too, you know?

Don't you find it funny that old cartoons are now being made into live action movies (it's funny to know that Justin Timberlake is the voice of BooBoo in the new Yogi Bear movie ) OP you are not going crazy, cartoons have been steadily getting worse. Gone are the cartoons from Saturday morning that actually had some sense of a storyline and plot. I'm tired of all the reality shows that have replaced them because they are so dumbed down, it's pathetic. It's no wonder I switched to anime.

Most western cartoons this days are made by hiring Asian animators but still not change that it is sucky since the art used still the sucky comic art.

i flip to cartoons when there's nothing else to watch.

i may be biased but anything related to batman is awesome no matter the time period.

nickelodeon's avatar was great except for the chernobyl animals and the anti-climatic ending. and some of the romantic pairings.

the new ninja turtles and ben10 were kinda entertaining.

the new tom and jerry show is an abomination. nothing beats the classic

samurai jack is an animated tribute to art.

This is merely the large amount of complaints from the parents stacked up together that makes TV more and more boring everyday, cartoons nowaday has to be clean funny and enjoyable for kids which isn't the case. It's not true there it's only because we feel nostalgic when we think about our shows from the 90s that they were better, I tried to force myself into watching some and just couldn't stand the idiotic contents/plots/stories of 99.9% of the cartoons that plays as of today, and the "hey did you saw the episode of "some ghey cartoon name here" this morning?" doesn't seem to be a part of this world anymore too, we used to have dragon ball and pokemon playing every morning instead of the boring news that replaced them today. Its almost as if everyone were racing for originality but end up failing and re-using old stuff in a terrible way, simply because the good stuff is already done. This scenario also reside in video games, I don't recall seeing any good original video games since 2000, but that's just me. jRPG is always about a bunch of kids with magical powers saving the world, no more fun in playing them as you can predict the scnario just from reading the back of the cover.

I don't know tbh. I think they're not as good as they were. But I may be biased because many things seem better in the past. Kids many years from now may be saying that new cartoons are crap compared to the ones they had when they were younger.

I think I was a late 80's - early 90's cartoon watcher...especially on Saturday mornings! I remember watching Transformers, He-man, Voltron, Thudercats (HO!), and even some like My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, Carebears and Strawberry Shortcake.
Now if I want my neice to watch Strawberry Shortcake I have to buy it on DVD.
Cartoons back then did have more of a storyline or plot, and some had moral teachings as well.
But look at other things that we used to watch back then, for example, Mr Roger's Neighborhood? Mr. Wizard's World? Reading Rainbow?
PBS was known for learning. I used to watch Bearenstein Bears. Even Sesame Street has changed...
And some of the older programs, like Lassie and Little House on the Prarie - instead of Green Acres and the Beverly Hillbillies, Nick at Nite plays Fresh Prince of Belair (< not a terrible show, but definitely shows what is considered a "classic" nowadays).

Anyways, I think most of the stuff generated for children now is crap. I like cartoons, but the remakes of some things (like X-men and Transformers) make me cringe and I can't watch it. I don't think I have seen a new cartoon that I have liked in a long time (this excludes anime of course which is more geared towards adults then children anyways).

(this excludes anime of course which is more geared towards adults then children anyways)

This is why the original Tom and Jerry, and Bugs Bunny were popular at the time. The cartoons made references to popular people, places and themes of that era so many years ago. When Scooby Doo has Don Knotts as a special guest it was funny at the time but is irritating at best today. Those two shows appealed to both kids and adults at the time with higher brow lines with slapstick for the kiddies.

Today's shows are reflecting the changes in kids tastes along with the new regulations that no cartoons should have blood, realistic violence against people or animals (hince robots destroying each other, but the humans were out of danger). Am I remembering that it was further regulations that guns (as we know them) were to be left out of cartoons airing on some stations? Today's Scooby Doo has Thelma hitting on Shaggy?!! I know that's loads better then being sexually ambiguous in the original, but Shaggy still loves him some Scooby. Cartoon Network isn't living up to it's name anymore when they've been airing non-cartoons on their station. It's my opinion that Toonami was popular in the first place as it aired almost all dubbed anime (oh, and this is how I found anime proper). I couldn't help how unbearably pissed I got when they air the first 80 or so episodes of Marchen Awakens Romance (MAR) and then drop it when the entire series ended at 102 episodes anyway, way to leave us hanging there CN. This also applies to almost all dubbed anime that made it onto CN, no finality in any series that wasn't Yugioh, and I hate that series.

Transformers was my favorite of all time, I watched it from Season 1 ep 1 on its original airing to the end of Beast Wars. I deny the very existence of all cartoons carrying that name after BW.

You are not alone in this thinking.

A large number of animators want to go back to traditional 2-D animation but due to have the executives upstairs, there are alot of cut backs. It isn't the animators fault who actually animated these crappy cartoons: no they do this to eat. Some animators are turn to diffrent outlets to express their ideas.

There is alot of executive meddling in today's animation.

Yeah the exes think that making a movie based on a classic will draw in adult fans of the show AND their children.

Hence the reason there is going to be a Smurf movie next year.

Anime is okay in itself but I don't want to limit myself to one culture of animation. We in the west got some good stuff too, but it's alot of our older works. The animation field will get better, but at this time there are lot of cutbacks and meddling which hurts the quality of animation here.

I think so with the exception of a few. Chowder and Foster's Home were pretty awesome. I also like Regular Show.
