Math is all about number 1 to 9 and then mixing them up. Math is boring, useless and stupid.

Math makes you sooner or later calculate your life constantly and that my friends is life kiling boriness.

I wont say this because i feel like it, i say because i know it. I got two buddies each from different city , who are studying to become math teachers and oh boy they dont even know what they like in their life.

All that energy done into stupid calculations in math was off from the real life problems.

I've been holding back reading this topic for months now, because I already basically knew what people think about Math, and how I would respond. Also, I knew I would easily see a post as insulting as the one above.

I can only guess the experience you have in Math, but my suspicion is that you haven't had much exposure to some of the exciting areas of Mathematics. If this is true, then for you to say that Math is useless is kind of like taking a Poetry class and claiming that Writing is useless, or eating a piece of bread and concluding that sandwiches suck. If you've actually made a study of theoretical Math, and decided it's useless, then your opinion might be qualified, and I won't argue with you (though I might want to know more about your reasoning). But if you've never studied past what's required by the basic secondary school, then I'd say you don't have the right to an opinion. Even if you have made a study of it, I'm sure most of the people here that say Math is useless have not studied it much. The popular perception of Math amounts to adding and multiplying some numbers or letters until you get another number or letter, which you're told is "the answer." I'll agree that this sounds boring as shit. As a side note though, do you seriously live your life without having to count things? You've never had to "calculate" whether you have enough money to buy something?

All of this is irrelevant, though, because the bulk of material on Mathematics is not about calculating; it's about solving. You are given information, and you attempt to arrive at a conclusion based on that information. Mathematics has some of the most elegant and creative solutions to some of the most difficult problems there are. It's built upon all the basic principles of logic, and if you want to argue that logic is useless, then I have no hope for you. Learning Mathematics is like re-learning how to think through problems in general, and coming up with some very clever ways to approach any situation. Do you really want to say that "real life problems" don't require logical thought? It's understandable if people say that Math is hard. You memorize a bunch of rules and procedures, and if you forget one of them, then you're completely wrong. But once you learn why the rules are true, they seem less like rules or laws, and more like "truths." You stop memorizing them, and start coming up with them yourself. It's a lot easier that way, and I'm not entirely sure why teachers don't explain why the things that they are teaching should be believed. But anyway, I am fine with people thinking that Math is hard -- whatever. It's irritating, though, to hear someone say that it's "boring, useless, and stupid." I'd bet you think learning is stupid too, right?
