I can get episode 1 of My Ordinary Life to play repeatedly, but I cannot get any episodes of Gintama to play no matter how many times I start and restart them.

What I find is that the most recent episodes of shows tend to work for me, no problems. While older shows tend to not work at all. I'm currently working on a workthrough of Bleach. Now since I'm only around ep 50 I am not watching the recent ones yet, but when I try them they play fine. And other testing tonight I find that the latest Bleach and Naruto Shippuden work fine, as well as Shugu Chara 1 which I tested for the heck of it because it is at the front of the popular list. Just tried Beelzebub 1 now and that does not work, neither does Dragon Crisis 1. So just from checking what plays, the crashing Roku isn't on all episodes of anime. Double checking these same episodes using iOS and they play fine over 3g and wifi. Just posting my trials since I'd like them all to work on Roku as it's much easier to watch than tiny iOS screen or sitting in front of a computer.

Hey all,

I dug around the Roku site to confirm what I already suspected. The problem we are all experiencing with our Roku's is, I believe, a buffering error. Something happens when content is being sent that causes the remaining stream to be rejected, but the broken packet/file/stream is still in the Roku's buffer. Here is what Roku says on a similar problem I got after forcing it buffer by trying multiple times to restart the stream, which works occasionally for me, but then I get this:

http://support.roku.com/forums/217884/entries/236448-stuck-on-loading-or-retrieving-message-what-should-i-do

I have more successfully tested the following solutions:

1. By exiting CrunchyRoll and re-entering, I am then able to play the CR content I couldn't just before.

2. In some cases I have gone so far as to open a different video app and play something. This seems to clear the cache for the previous application. I can then stop after a few seconds of play, go back to CR, and play content the simple exit and enter wouldn't fix.

3. Finally I have rebooted my Roku (just the Roku!) and been able to play content without error afterwards. Do remember to give it a real 10 sec pause between the time you remove power and put it back in. The box needs to discharge stored power completely before you plug it back in.

I also believe, supported only by subjective tests, that getting rid of memory resident programs like various clocks, screen savers, games, etc will improve your ability to receive a stream (show/movie/radio) and buffer it. There is only so much memory available, it wouldn't surprise me to discover Roku uses/wants free internal flash memory to buffer content. That would explain why it get's cleared this way, when you leave the CR app it clears the memory to make it available again for use. There may be better explanations all the hardware geeks are now busy writing to about in rebuttal, I'm just a programmer, so YMMV! I cleared off all the bling and channels I "might" want someday, and believe the time between errors improved noticeably. Prior that I was getting an error about 1 in 3 times, now I'm getting errors about 1 in 5 times, and am actually making headway catching up to the current ep of Bleach.

I have some ideas on why this is happening, but no way to test them, and am not a networking specialist. My first theory however is a software issue. It would help to know if those of you reporting problems have also used Hulu Plus? I started the app and it needed to do a software update for the site to work. I did the update, hoping the free Hulu content would be available, and then removed it from my channel library when it wasn't (another thing you can clean up to reduce memory use maybe). Now I wonder if it effected the media player to do something CR isn't accounting for or expecting based on their own testing etc, which I'm sure they did before offering itself for us.
Other ideas are corrupt packets coming from files being transfered from data storage to active memory for use. Content already cached is fine, and would explain why more recent eps are less prone to error, they are used more frequently.

Not to make this sound like a pure CR problem as some have suggested. If I'm correct then clearly the Roku mishandled the corrupt packet, allowing it to be buffered. No doubt, iOS doesn't buffer the corrupt packet, hence the difference between the two coming from the same system but not causing the same problems. I would further say something about the way these files are corrupt is the primary issue for both CR and Roku to handle, since other content providers I've tested don't show similar problems but I can't imagine they don't happen, just they have solved it. Alas, without taking one of the Roku apart, I don't have a way to test or see what's going on in there. Very frustrating that, I need to search more on how to hack one. I wonder if responds to SNMP tests, anybody know?

Anyway, I hope this helps all involved. All these ideas are mine alone, supported by nothing but anecdotal evidence, and may be the product of a delusional mind. I haven't figured out a good way to test for that yet either.

Cheers,
neondrmr

I can't get Occult Academy to play. I've reset my wireless, reset the Roku, Netflix plays fine. But it seems the older anime doesn't want to stream but I can get the more current anime to stream.

I suspect the CR channel on the Roku is buggy... it either leaks memory until it malfunctions, or it's a buffering problem as you suggest. After taking three hours to watch four half-hour dramas, I was kicked back to the episode screen midway through the program. I was forced to watch another ad before the show picked back up and played for thirty seconds before kicking me back to the episode screen. I repeated this futile exercise a half-dozen times. Then I pressed the home button, went back into the CR channel and was able to complete the episode without any further problem. I've also had an episode interrupted a dozen times with the "loading, please wait" screen, where I had to wait for several minutes for the episode to start playing again. I suspect CR "cheaped out" on the Roku channel developers it hired, or they just don't really care about the Roku as a platform. There's little other conclusion to draw for how long the very public problems have been allowed to languish unsolved. I doubt it's solely a Roku problem because the Netflix and Amazon channels have performed flawlessly for me.

BasouKazuma, a good way of testing this would be to try watching Pink Lipstick with a Roku box yourself. Without a doubt, you'll experiece all the joy we've been experiencing.

I love CR and I hope this is fixed soon. I bought the Roku box specifically to watch Korean dramas on CR and it's useless for that purpose. Other channels such as Netflix are fine on the Roku.

Ditto! Luckily, I own an iPad, so when my Roku doesn't work, we watch these on it. The Korean dramas are very well done. We also started watching "High Kick", which is a comedy. Very funny! Give it a try.

Strangely enough this sometimes (but not always) works for me using my iPad. If the Roku struggles, I boot up the same show on my iPad. Sometimes the Roku version kicks in a few minutes after.

Whenever I try to view episode 1 of "Astarotte's Toy" on my Roku box, I get an error message saying that the video cannot be found.

This might be my television but for the Korean Dramas, the subtitles aren't fully on the screen! I don't understand and I really want to watch them especially "Bad Couple" because its hilarious to me. But so far, the anime has been working better than it was at first.

While what you reference here is a legitimate issue, I think it's not the one I have. The never-ending buffering seems different from the never-starting stream.

The problem I have is tied pretty consistently with prime time viewing hours. Middle of the night, no problem. Middle of prime time, no stream. I cannot even seem to establish a connection. If I manage to, I'm golden from there out, with no buffering issues. It seems like a quota issue.

As for the suggestions you make:

1. By exiting CrunchyRoll and re-entering, I am then able to play the CR content I couldn't just before.

2. In some cases I have gone so far as to open a different video app and play something. ...

3. Finally I have rebooted my Roku (just the Roku!) and been able to play content without error afterwards. ...

I've done all of these while having trouble (and yes I know to let it sit a while after disconnecting power), and not one has resolved the problem I have when I cannot get a stream started.

I hope both problems are solved, because I'm pretty sure they have completely different causes. It would be a shame to fix one and leave the other broken, thinking victory is had.

I'm going to second that it is not the same problem I am having. I experience problems on an episode by episode basis. The ones that work always work and work well, those that start to buffer (hitting about 10 percent of the bar) always get stuck there, and then crash to episode select screen. Before the at&t issues were resolved I would also lose connection after about 2 minutes of viewing, but that problem went away with that issue.
