Hi Gang. Crunchyroll and Kdrama are the bomb. I have an issue much as already described. Timing out, buffering on my ROKU. is there an update as to when this issue may be resolved. I have a very impatient wife at home who loves the Korean drama's and of late, with the playback problems has been urging me to drop the membership as the 30 second glimpses of action interspersed between the pleasure of watching the blue progress bar inch across the screen for 5 minutes has become a bit tedious.

We just switched our Roku videos to stream through a new service provider today which should increase performance. Please let us know if you still have problems. (this goes for anyone else reading this)

Oh man, I'm really disappointed to learn that Crunchyroll maxes out at 480p over Roku. I bought a Roku XS, an LED TV, upgraded my internet and even signed up for a Premium membership trying to watch Crunchyroll in my livingroom but after experiencing such poor picture quality it's been quite a let-down. I was planning to get a yearly membership but it doesn't seem worth it to me without at least 720p.

Is there any other way to get 720p or higher Crunchyroll on my TV without plugging it into a computer? (not a viable option for me)

How is you video playback not HD? My anime has been looking crystal clear. *Dumb Question Alert:* Do you have it plugged in through HDMI? Or, did you switch the output settings on your Roku to 720/1080p? (I know, it sounds redundant, but hear me out.) I have been watching my anime in HD with a very similar setup.

First off, sorry for double posting, but I like to separate my issues.

Now, could you tell me what the latest version of Roku App is, and if those changes have 100% taken effect? Because I'm still having troubles getting a good stream going. I still have to leave my videos paused for 2-5 minutes to avoid rebuffering (as of 2 hours ago.) The load times seem a little better compared to a couple of days ago. But still, they're MUCH slower compared to Netflix on my Roku.

As a comparison, I do a two second buffer, and I can watch an HD movie on Netflix without rebuffering. But on CR, I do a ten-twenty second buffer in the beginning, and most likely again in anywhere from five-fifteen minutes.

So, your service is better, but not best.

Here are ALL of my test results:

I was still having problems watching episodes on Crunchyroll on my Roku as of last night. Before all the rebuffering issues, I would hardly ever see the "Loading Please Wait" screen except for at the beginning of an episode and episodes would load super fast. I don't seem to have much of an issue during the day, but at night time it has been terrible. I was watching Gintama last night (episodes 110, 111, 112) around 11:30pm to 12:00am ET. Episode110 I didn't have too much of an issue with, load time wasn't bad and only rebuffered twice. Episode 111 took a while to load and rebuffered about 4 times with a slight wait each time as the bar moved slowly across the screen. Episode 112 was pretty much unwatchable, took forever to load and would rebuffer almost ever minute showing me the "Loading Please Wait" screen for a long time each time, so I ended up just giving up. I am still having no issues with my internet service and no issues watching Hulu or Netflix on my Roku. I actually watched a whole movie last night on Netflix without any issues at all. I'm so glad you guys are working on this, thanks so much for that. Since you just switched your service provider for the Roku yesterday, I will give it a few more days to see if there is improvement. If I have any more issues I will repost.

Hey Jake, thanks for replying to my post!

Yes, I am plugged in via an HDMI connection and my Roku is setup for 1080p. I believe I am getting a 480p picture from Crunchroll which technically is High Definition but 720p and 1080p are noticibly better and is what I am used to after watching anime on Netflix.

After a bit of research on these forums, it appears that Crunchyroll can only stream 720p and 1080p if you are watching on your computer. Apparently, Crunchyroll has to encode each episode at each quality level for each device seperately and the 720p and 1080p quality levels take a LOT longer to encode. Thus, I assume that since they only have so much computing power/time they have to pick and chose what they are going to encode and updating the entire Roku library to 720p does not appear to be high enough on their priority list.

AFAIK, the only non-computer device that can obtain 720p from CR currently is the Boxee Box, and that is due to it displaying the standard Flash stream.

It isn't HD because CR doesn't currently do 720p encodes for the Roku.

Thanks for the reply AncientOne, you seem to be very knowledgeable on this topic.

I might take a closer look at the Boxee Box but I've heard it has its own problems interfacing with Crunchyroll. Since Roku has a bigger market share than Boxee, I am thinking CR might encode Roku in 720p before they bother addressing Boxee's shortcomings. Do you have any thoughts on this? Also, do you know if Roku shares its streaming format with any other supported devices such as Google TV or iOS which would increase the chances of CR devoting resources to encoding at 720p?

I thought Roku was using our new service provider but it actually isn't yet. We were going to switch yesterday but I now see that this switch was delayed so that's why performance seems the same for people. I'll update this thread when I confirm that the switch has been made.

Update: The switch has been made. So we are now officially using the new service provider for our Roku streams but I wouldn't be surprised if things are a little bumpy at first while videos are being cached.

I suspect you are correct about 720p encodes for the Roku coming before CR irons out the wrinkles in their Boxee app. Still, I remember seeing that CR was going to start 720p encodes only a few months after I purchased my Roku, but that didn't happen. Since then I've taken a "I'll believe it when I see it" approach to any discussions of 720p for the Roku.

The Roku encodes are also used for VIA (Vizio Internet Apps) devices, although as I recall, Premium login is not supported on the VIA devices, meaning no 720p encodes would be used there.

I know what you mean about "believing it when you see it " and I believe you are correct about VIA. On a positive note, Bjaker did confirm today that they are still working on it:

Once rolled out it will be with new content going forward.

We will however work to offer preexisting content at higher resolutions, it will just take time.

I hope that's true because it was working great but now everything is moving painfully slow. I can't even get an episode watched at all.

That's exactly what I'm going through. CR is pretty much not working smoothly now. An episode may stop but keeps stopping and loading to the point where I give up. I can't wait to have it all back again.

Just finished watching an episode of Brave 10. The playback was absolutely flawless. Once they get 720p going (I noticed the quality difference after realizing it's 480p) it will be the best Crunchyroll experience.

So good job! Everything's becoming the way it should be. I'm a happy customer.
