I haven't replied again since I first posted back on page 31 about the rebuffering issues, half because I've been too busy to watch a ton of stuff and half because I wanted to test it before I did reply, but I've been watching a bunch more over the last week and it seems to be much improved since you guys switched to the new service provider. I don't think I've had it rebuffer on me once this last week. *knock on wood!*

So no complaints, and I just wanted to say thanks to the staff for responding quickly to the issue, communicating what was going on and getting it resolved. It's much appreciated. Since I've only had my Roku and premium membership a short time I didn't know what to expect when I posted. So thanks!

i just tried crunchyroll for the first time ever on roku on my old tube tv that's 4:3. i was really excited by the selection of old and new animes, but as soon as I tried playing the old animes that were 4:3 full screen with subs my excitement turned to huge disappointment. the subs are all the way on the bottom and get partially cut off if they are more than one line. the subs are pretty big which is fine, but cuz of that and how close to the bottom they are they are always more than one line and end up going off screen. i get the same exact thing with netflix subbed anime. everything is designed for the lcd's and not for old tv's. would it really be that hard to add a setting to zoom the picture out a little? it's only with full screen 4:3 anime's. the newer ones like naruto shippuuden display perfectly even though they are 16:9. it makes no sense. the 16:9 displays perfect, but the 4:3 which matches my 4:3 tv is too overscanned by a little bit. if you fix that or make some sort of setting that can fix it then i'll subscribe to the premium membership for life. if i have to watch it on my pc, then what's the point of paying when it's available for free elsewhere. i'll pay gladly to watch it on my tv.

If your CRT has horizontal and vertical size controls, you may find you can significantly reduce the overscanned area. The factory overscan settings for most CRT TVs were more aggressive than conservative, and thus can often be improved on.

my tv doesn't have such settings. just the typical brightness, color, and sharpness settings.

i read that people complained about the exact same thing with Hulu plus and guess what? hulu plus made an adjustment and fixed it so I know it can be done. i've read posts that are several months old regarding this problem so I guess Crunchyroll has no interest in fixing this problem and getting me to subscribe for the premium service. shame.

It would mostly be for those who were experiencing problems with the prior CDN network: buffering, stalling, drop-outs mid-episode. A higher quality CDN does more analysis of the dropped packet resend requests that they get and are more aggressive about finding solutions to problematic paths ~ a lower quality one is more complaints driven. A complaints driven CDN is even worse for the Roku, since a smaller share of members use it, and often they are away from their computer and access to the forums when they do. But you pay extra for that extra quality of service, so it likely to be a benefit of the growth in subscribers at Crunchyroll that Crunchy can afford to switch to a higher quality CDN.

Its very much an issue of what the internet path is like between you and the location that the CDN picks as the source for your stream ~ one person can have flawless performance out of the CDN, because there are no problems in the path, while someone a block over on a different ISP is tearing their hair out.

I used to be plagued by those for most dramas, but since last summer they've been much less common. But every once in a while I'd still experience something, like dropping in mid-episode. If you can restart the episode right away and it works fine, that was probably the CDN's fault. Fingers crossed that they've gone away for good.

Well that makes sense. Better performance quality never hurt anyone, lol. I've been thankful that I've never really had any issue on playback with mines, at least not when it comes to my roku. But I can most certainly feel how that would probably annoy the hell out of some.

It wouldn't be a setting accessible from the remote. It would be manual controls, possibly on the rear of the TV. That's where they were located on some of the CRT sets I have owned during my life, including the one from 1992 that was my last CRT TV.

Hulu's IT budget is probably as large as CR's annual profit is, possibly even their revenue. Given that the "Hulu fixed it, so CR should" isn't directly applicable.

If for example, only 1% (or less) of CR users are complaining of a problem with this, it may be on the "things to fix" list, but would not be a high priority item, and the number of people it affects is only going to decrease with time. If you have limited personnel, it makes sense to prioritize those tasks that will satisfy the greatest number of customers.

As you indicated in your original message, the newer anime appear to be unaffected, which means CR didn't ignore the problem. It simply may be that going back and redoing all the older title subtitles either fails to provide a sufficient return on investment (i.e., time spent fixing it would fail to result in a net gain in subscribers that would sufficient to pay for the work), or they are doing it, but at a slow enough pace you probably wouldn't notice it.

i think the newer titles being unaffected is just because they are 16:9 so the black bars on top and bottom when viewed on 4:3 tube tv gives it a lot of leeway. the subs are at the bottom of the picture of those too, but because of all that extra black space on the screen it's impossible for it go to offscreen. so they didn't do anything special to give them credit for. so i guess this is something they'll never fix and now i have to decide if i want to subscribe just to watch naruto shippuuden on my tv when i could get it via torrents and convert it to dvd. if I could watch everything problem free then it would be a no brainer, but just for one show i don't know if that's money well spent. most of the titles i'm interested in are old and 4:3.

Frankly, it took a bit of searching to find something that was both 4:3 and was added recently enough it should have been after CR was made aware of issues viewing on old CRT televisions:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/mobile-suit-zeta-gundam

These subtitles appear to fall within the title safe area. If the subtitles from this get cut off on your TV, then your TV may be overscanning beyond spec. I expect if CR moved them any higher, they would start getting complaints from those watching on computers and HDTV sets that they were too high on the screen.

Guys are we ever going to get subs on the Via/Vizio app again? Unlike the buffering issues (which afaik got fixed) this isn't a error cause by traffic or other complex issues, it's caused by somebody screwing up and making the vids with subs that the web videos app can't read.

It happens I get it, but this issue has been going on since just after christmas.... we are about to go into march here. It would be nice to at least get some kind of assurance that people are working on the issue.

It is a little more complex than it lets on to be.
This is because it is an app available through Flingo.

We are currently working to fix this. I received an update last week and we are targeting to have it resolved by the end of this month.
I'll follow up internally again, as well.

is that why crunchyroll isn't listed as a channel on VIA anymore?

Completely separate issue that we are currently trying to resolve.
We've reached out to Flingo and are waiting to hear back from them.
