On 4kids being praised and hated at the same time.

I understand many people dislike/hate 4kids. It's understandable with their localizations. Rather than this be geared toward why they are hated, I am asking something about an exception to the norm of 4kids dubs. I've been to sites where they say Pokemon was one of the if not the only good show they did. This is what confuses me: While Yugioh and One Piece often have been crucified for their edits, Pokemon has been criticized similarly. I mean, their Pokemon edits. However, the following is illustrating something that yet might be true but it is more of a hypothetical example: I've read in places that while there are people that prefer One Piece and Yugioh in Japanese (they do have good reason) though those same people may enjoy the Pokemon dub more. All three shows went through extreme censorship and script bastardizing yet. I've seen people comment they enjoy Yugioh and Pokemon more in English or the like.

My question is this: With the anti-4kids population, why have I often seen praise for Pokemon while Yugioh and One Piece are slammed (outside of the aforementioned reasons above)? That is, why might people praise the Pokemon English dub (the first 8 seasons only. I've read about how people hate the PokemonUSA version. From the clips I've seen, I am in that group. I think it's safe to say of the people who have commented about the licensing shift from what I have read, a majority prefer the 4kids version) while also slamming OP, Yugioh, and other 4kids dubs?

In simple words, what makes an Americanized version of Pokemon enjoyable to perhaps 750,000 viewers when those same 750,000 viewers find Yugioh and OP tolerable to just plain unbearable?

People who say this have deep nostalgia in Pokemon and Yugioh. When the Pokemon and Yugioh came out, we were at the target age.
We loved Pokemon and Yugioh.
But then when it was changed to Pokemon USA and the newer seasons of Yugioh came out, we became xenophobic. We didnt want Ash's voice to change, or to say goodbye to Yugi, Joey, Kaiba and the others. We also moved out of the target audience.

Then by the time One Piece dub came out, we were already moving out of Pokemon and Yugioh, and probably got into anime already (and started watching subs). We thought it was a kid show and seen the sub and started to bash the dub. Maybe the target audince for pirate tales (in 4kids eyes) is 7 year old boys. Not like how it is in Japan.

So there you have it. The explanation ^_^

There is one thing I have to praise 4kids the most for and its 2003 TMNT cartoon. It was an entertaining cartoon that both adults and children could watch that tended to push the boundries of what should be allowed in a cartoon. A WESTERN CARTOON.

It also had anthromorphic animals, which are rarer in animation nowadays and given a bad rap (THANKS FURRY FANDOM).

As for dubbing I thought Pokemon and Kirby were pretty good. Yeah people complained but that didn't stop me from watching them.

I freaking love One Piece's original voice cast but I'm crazy about the 4kids cast too. Edits obviously suck if you're 13+ but what the heck's that got to do with the cast? Just thoroughly play the game Pirates' Carnival and tell me to my face that the 4kids cast sucks! I'm actually of the opinion that 4kids did a better job voicing a few villains and side characters than the original did. Granted, they had more time. One of the only things that could make it more perfect is if Luffy would sharply drop the tone of his voice when he's being stubborn or brim-shadowing-my-eyes pi**ed.

And on the Pokémon point, I think since most English speakers play the English version of the game, they prefer to hear the towns, characters, attacks, and Pokémon with their established English names. Especially when the Pokémon are yelling them all the time. I don’t watch the series though so I can’t give have a firsthand explanation. Well, that’s a lie; I do watch the yearly movie.

Well I used to hate 4kids. But I can understand why they did it. Back then we didn't have streaming video sites like Hulu, Youtube so anime can be streamed uncut like today. But at least 4kids did the right thing today by creating Toonzaki and broadcasting anime uncut. I praise them for it, but they have atone for the past. Hey, even Funimation used to screw up anime but now they dedicate to make anime uncut and they do a lot more like bringing Japanese cinema and the live-action Moyashimon.

4Kids didn't just edit what they had to in order to get it on television. They edited what they didn't have to. Like names, food and places.

I thought the One Piece Rap was pretty catchy. Definitely made me want to listen to its Opening then any other English Dub for an animes opening

“We Are!” is gold that I wouldn’t have minded listening to for the entire series but I liked the Pirate Rap too. I like the idea of adding the crew to the song as they came along. Though I think they could've found something a little better for the navigator than "the l-a-d-y"…
And if you watch FUNimation shows on TV you’ll see that they cut the original songs to about 30 sec. anyway….

Does anyone think 4kids did an ok job with Sonic X? At first I couldn’t stand how they cast Dr. Eggman but it grew on me. I think Sonic is a hard character to cast. But I loved what they did with two side characters, Bocoe and Decoe. As for Knuckles, I kinda liked him as an Aussie in the ADV Sonic movie, but that wouldn't have suited his personality on Sonic X.

well, mostly because i was a little kid when i was watching Pokemon and Yugioh~ since with the 4Kids, it's more nostalgic and i really didn't like it when they changed the voices for Pokemon. =/

I actually like the dubs for One Piece. Even Sanji's older voice actor grew on me. I've never heard the original Japanese cast, so I can't make any true judgments though.. Also, I actually enjoy the US opening for Once Piece. Always had me pumped up to watch it. Yeah, pumped up by a theme song to watch an anime at my age, like a little kid.

while I can understand editing stuff out that people might find offensive (like cleavage or nipples) so you won't get sued, and changing names I'm ok with sometimes (Jounuchi to Joey) but changing around the story, editing the color of a character and editing the most random things is where I draw the line.

anyways since their target audience are kids and they want the parents of the kids to buy their products such as toys or games, thinking from a business point of view, if it appeases 7 out of 10 parents then its ok.

as for the shows, Pokemon I'm ok with as with the PokemonUSA version, Yu-Gi-Oh I enjoyed, and as for One Piece I didn't really like their version I don't even understand why there was a rap for the opening and it just looked weird with all the water guns.
