Cosplay = an action of trying to look like/impersonate certain characters, this fact supported by almost all of the Anime conventions including in the west that are doing Cosplay COMPETITION or doing look-alike competition.

Reference

Race are a very important part in Cosplay because all the characters the cosplayers cosplaying were all based on specific human races. For example Manga/Anime characters are made based on Asians facial & body form so that only Asians can succeed cosplaying them, comic/cartoon characters are made based on westerners facial & body form so that only westerners can succeed cosplaying them, etc.

It is very foolish to Cosplay characters that are not based on your race facial & body form, because :
- You are going to be a racist against the race of the characters you cosplaying.
- You will obviously fail to Cosplay them or fail to look like the characters you cosplaying which will make you hated by many peoples who are fans of the characters you cosplaying.
- You will show how ashamed you are of your own race that will lead you to being mocked both by the peoples of the Anime character's race and also by your own peoples who are the same race as you who feel disgraced by you.
- Etc

The fact that race are part of Cosplay also the reason why it is not racism for someone including who not even Asian to say things like "Asian cosplayers [ who Cosplay Anime/Asian characters ] are better" , "westerners [ who Cosplay Anime/Asian characters ] are inferior" , "Only Asian can Cosplay Anime/Asian characters", etc.

Simply put :
- Someone who is not Asian will never able to look like Jacky Chan or other Asians, thus will hurt their fans when someone who is not Asian trying to Cosplay Jacky Chan or other Asians.
- Someone who is not westerner will never able to look Bieber or other westerners, thus will hurt their fans when someone who is not westerner trying to Cosplay Bieber or other Asians.
- Someone who is not African will never able to look Jordan or other African, thus will hurt their fans when someone who is not African trying to Cosplay Jordan or other African.

Don't get so fixated on this subject....I would not cosplay anyway but,
Anime characters also aren't supposed to emulate Japanese people exactly as I recall.

Besides, anime characters don't really look all that western anyway. They're pretty neutral looking if you ask me but neutral in the sense that it could be anybody but actual Japanese people for the most part anyway. There's also anime characters that are Japanese that actually do look Japanese. Kanuka Clancy (although she's half-Japanese) and Takeo Kumagami from Patlabor actually look Japanese.

Anime is a great fantasy art form for me, and I love and appreciate the Japanese manga, and anime, so arigato.....

The evidence of Anime characters are based on Asians facial & body form can be seen at how it is Asians who are better cosplaying Anime characters, for more concrete evidence almost all [ over 90% ] of the Cosplay blogs, videos and topics on the net are only showing Asian cosplayers or atleast almost all of the cosplayers shown on it are Asian cosplayers. For example :
- This Cosplay blog were made by a westerners but almost all [ over 90% ] of the cosplayers shown on it are Asian cosplayers
- This Cosplay video were made by a westerner but ALL of the cosplayers shown on it are Asian cosplayers
- This Cosplay video another Cosplay video that were also made by another westerner but almost all of the cosplayers on it are Asians.

The reason why I'm showing evidence of Cosplay blogs and videos made by westerners but featuring Asians instead of Cosplay blogs and videos made by Asians featuring Asians are to avoid bias. Unlike this Cosplay video featuring western cosplayers but were made by a westerner :

This was a tribute to the good Naruto cosplayers that are NOT asian. I'm tired of people saying that asians are the only ones good at cosplaying. That isn't true. :

OMG...I especially like the last Cosplay video....it is almost as if Naruto jumped to life...!

It is beautiful in this form, I agree..

but look at it this way, Proud Asian Kid, soooo many people are loving this, from different nationalities, they just wanna jump in
there and play their fav character....I would love to be Tomoe from Kenshin, BUT I would fail miserably...

You should be proud but I hope in your heart you realize the reason I am here is because of the love of your art form...

Friend and a proud Irish kid...

Something wrong can't be justified "so many peoples love it, they just want to play their favorite character, etc".

Also, what about the Anime fans who''s number are 100 times more than cosplayers, you don't think about how they will feel when their favorite Anime characters ruined by selfish, ignorant cosplayers who only think about having fun?

It's a personal choice, not a racial mather, it's like saying whoever created halloween should be the only one celebrating it. People from across the world what animes and if they feel like cosplaying in events, it's up to them.

that's lame, it doesn't matter what race you are to cosplay a character. it still advertises the series no matter who is wearing its merchandise. if you want to cosplay, cosplay. cosplay doesn't mean looking exactly like the original character, it's your version of that character.

Personal choice must not made by sacrificing other peoples rights, someone just can't do whatever they want, that is why laws are made to to bring order to the world.

That would be selfish, you don't care your action are causing pain to many other peoples.

Well, I will never cosplay, I have too many other things to worry about like class and sum serious party time BUT
Proud Asian, if you want to think people are selfish and ignorant for cosplaying, which I would guess means costume playing as I am NOT into it per say, that is your true belief..
and you must stick to your true beliefs....that is the truth of it....

Strong opinions are never given lightly, and you have stated yours.....
I understand that....

but just try a bit of tolerance for the others beside the Asian who do dress up like a character and step into their fantasy world..

It could not hurt...ask the Trekkies and the Harry Potter Muggles, etc...

Me, I will just go grab a drink and kick back...

Stay well, be happy.

No it doesn't matter and for one simple reason, nobody will ever be able to look exactly like who they are trying to look like, so who cares, let them have fun.

Nope. Race isn't important at all in cosplay. A good cosplayer is important in cosplay.
