Despite its name, this gaming franchise is anything but final, and as more and more Final Fantasy games come out, the series is changing. Whether the changes are permanent or installment-only is uncertain. This thread is to discuss the series in general, its impact on the video gaming culture, the trends that are currently being established, and anything else that isn't installment-specific (examples to reinforce points from certain installments are fine, however). This will most likely be a discussion based heavily on opinion, so don't take anything said here as necessarily fact.

Well, I'm going to be blunt. I feel like Final Fantasy is going downhill. But, I have hope lol. Maybe XIII Versus will be the redeeming game?

True, FFXIII didn't live up to the expectations of many players, myself included. Many people disliked the linearity, but for me, it was the presentation of the story. The story had real promise, but I don't know if it was just the English voice acting cast, but the voice acting wasn't great, and quite corny at times (I'm referring to Snow right now).

There seems to be a trend in the franchise of late, that the games are becoming more of an action-RPG. First it was the gambit system in FFXII, then the Paradigm System in FFXIII, and Versus actually is an action-RPG. I don't know the reason for this variance, but I'm not sure it's for the best. I mean, experimenting is fine and all, I enjoyed FFXII's battle system, and even FFXIII's battle system, but I don't want Final Fantasy to become an action-RPG. If I wanted that I could go play Kingdom Hearts or something.

Hopefully Versus will redeem the series.

Also, I feel like Square Enix has put more effort into graphics than into the story plot. I mean, FF VII and VIII weren't great because of their graphics. It was BECAUSE of the story plot. You take that away and you've just added to the never ending pile of mediocre games.

For FXIII I believe that is true. The graphics are amazing, but that shouldn't be the focal point of the developers efforts. Eye-candy should come second. But you have to admit, for their times, FFVII and FFVIII had really good graphics. VII was the first 3-D Final Fantasy game, and VIII had realistic character designs (as realistic as the technology would permit, I mean). But yes, it wasn't the graphics that necessarily made them great games. It was the story and the gameplay.

Fair point. I mean, those were the graphics of the late 90's
