Oversexualization of female characters
Posted 12/27/10
I just watched the last episode of Panty and Stocking, and I thought it was fantastic. But it got me thinking about the sexualization of female characters in a ton of the cartoons that make it to the US. I thought PSG did a great job of parodying the stereotype, both making sexuality a central character trait and turning it into a source of power for the main characters.

This is unlike a lot of the stuff I watched around a decade ago, and that my brother still watches, where high school girls are given basically no character traits, other than "huge tits" and some vague likes and dislikes. Then practically all of their decisions are made for them because of some ham-handed love they feel for whatever dude the audience is supposed to sympathize with, between scenes of them bathing turning into hilarious grope fests!!! and that guy walking in on them naked.

There's nothing wrong with drawing beautiful women into cartoons. Sexualization of characters can really push writing forward and make for better stories, because a person's sexuality is tied very closely to their personal identity. But oversexualization is stuff where characters barely develop or exist to do anything but look pretty and get naked.

Being male, I don't read or watch a lot of stuff aimed at women, so I don't know if there's a similar problem on the other side of the spectrum. But I'm an adult now: it's never been cool to watch stuff like Mahoromatic, but now it's also way creepier than it was when I was thirteen, and it's so disheartening to see that people are still creating characters that do nothing but make misogyny into normalcy.

Serious discussion. Heck yeah.

Well usually in shojo anime, u never see this like yeah u will see a character with big boobs but she has a character like shes usually the strong or the uptight type but u never see any guys nakie only shirt less haha, but usually when the female character is nakie and some guy walks in on them, they cover there selfd ASAP and not let the guy see them. i've never seen the shows you've watched ofc being a 16 year old girl but i really think its wrong that makes make girls like that cuz where really not like that :/ and that dissapoints me, but along with there are almost no girls like that its like the whole romance in shojo with the guy the main character falls in love with, hes always so perfect and nice and it makes us want a guy like that (sometimes) so watching those kinds of shows with girls like that makes guy want girls who have big boobs and butts and want nothing else you know? at least the girls want a guy with manners..... i'm going kinda off track so i'll stop there haha

One of the main reasons is cultural differences between America and Japan.
I've been to Japan a few times already and when you hit the street of Akibahara or Shinjuku the anime scene is hardcore with mad female imagines around. The whole sexual innuendo sales. Much like it does where I live in Las Vegas.
It is a fantasy of having such a hot super sexy girl with short skirt with big breast.(not saying that is the only fantasy now)
But it sales and makes money.

Here in the states we are just not as open when it comes to sexual pleasures and whatnot.
Japan it's there in your face and nobody cares. It's like if you grow up in a town where every Friday everyone does everything naked that whole day. You've been doing it all your life and has been done in this town for the past 10+ generations.
You decide to move to a new locations and do this out of habit. Neighbor comes by and flips out you answering the door without any clothes on.
You see it as normal but it isn't for them.
Same with Japan. They are open with sex and sexual things and nobody cares.
Nobody is tripping thinking the women are being treated different. That is crap we do here in the states.
Getting offended over lame shit.
Like someone getting upset because I typed the word (shit) on a forum.
Petty things like that don't matter.

Another example would be if you stopped by your local porn store.
Many people wanna sneak in and not be seen for they and some image they need to uphold or something.
Lame stupid crap to worry about.

Nobody gave me nor any of my friends a second glace when we went upstairs to the adult section of the video store.
There were people there to give you advice on which video or even sexual game was good or not.
Half the time the adult games are in the mix with the regular games.
First time I saw this I looked around to see if I entered some 18+ section.
Come to find out it is normal. Plus nobody was even pay me any mind for being in that section.
Heck, I've heard the stories of girl who like guys would watch the guy in a store just to see what he is into.
If he were to be looking at a special sort of girl they sometimes think to themselves that this is the type of girl he goes for and change their image to fit her and be noticed.

So I don't believe that they are over-sexualizing(not even a bloody word) any of the females. At least not in a way that it's meant to piss females off.

I don't like it at all. I won't watch shows that portray women like this, or all the nasty pedo stuff with horny young girls. If I were a guy and watched crap like that, I'd keep it a secret. But yeah, I don't see that in shojo... the guys are hot, but usually have great personalities. There's always some shirtless scenes thrown in, but they don't over sexualize men and turn them into eye candy only.

Wow this is sincere coming from a guy . I have no idea why Japan is so obsessed with underaged girls, but I guess it must be a cultural thing. By now it's gotten pretty out of hand, really annoying, and hard to ignore! Sometimes I think anime just runs on fanservice...
(Kinda unrelated, but the fact shojo manga has no male nudity while shounen manga has tits up your face always bugged the fuck outta me...)

Of course. Not all guys are pervs. There are still "real" men around.

Anyways I typed alot but I felt it was necessary to explain a few things. It truly comes down to culture.
In fact most of the world is pretty open about sex and sexual things.
The facts are Japanese writers are writing for their fans.
It's a job really. But the thing is, there is such a wide verity of anime out there that such a thing honestly shouldn't get to anyone.
If one doesn't like that type then simple don't watch.
That is the easiest solution.

I for one love a strong, smart, & capable female.
So all the ridiculously big breasted characters I look past. They normally have nothing to offer but fan service to those that are A) socially challenged and can't speak with real women. Little pervert kids. C) Pervert Adults (male and female I might add)
Again I feel they do it for the money. If something gets you paid, even if you yourself don't really care for it; you may just continue to do it.
One must weigh their options in life.

don't really care to be honest with you females don't complain when males are done the same way, so why should I care about females? "yes there are anime series out that do that" to quote what Retbulter said from the movie "Gone with the WInd "Frankly My dear I don't give a damn" Also I want to point out that they are not real people and never will be real people they are just some made up characters like in any other forum of visual medium out there. I will add one thing the whole "waifu" thing is one thing I will not understand, sure some of the anime girls are hot but come on are some people that lonely and desperate to make in their heads that they are married to that character. I guess the only other thing I can add is this being attracted to a 16 or 17 year old is perfectly healthy and works both way for males and females but due to laws in most countries the age limit of consent is well guess what "16 or 17" even the state I am from is such the case but I do no want to dabble in political affairs about the age of consent etc right now. If you agree with me fine, if you don't then what ever, I am still open for some debate though.

Hyper Sexualized =/= a flat character. No pun intended.

There are many shows where characters who exude a strong sense of sensuality also have great personalities.

If the near Gendo Pose doesn't give it away, Shizuku from Kampher is a strong willed, almost domineering character. Confident and in control, when you're watching her, you always get the feeling that she knows more then she's letting on or that her actions are based on ulterior motives.

Giving your audience a strong sense for this kind of character is more difficult then you would think. How and when to have a character act a certain way in order to emphasis certain key personality traits can sometimes get lost in the writing process, especially when you KNOW you have to put an emphasis on sexuality.

With a lot of shows, writers and artists have deadlines, and ultimately it ends up being easier to just have everyone go to the beach. Though in defense of Kampher they did that episode at a Water Park =p.

Good topic.

The thing that people need to understand in these situations is that it always comes down to money. Business is a good thing, it's what makes the world go round. It just so happens that sex sells. The majority of people who watch anime are in it for the sexual fantasy. This is what makes all the money and sells like crazy. Attractively drawn characters with outrageous proportions that have nothing in their minds except for an unreasonably insane undying love for only one person, and a cute personality that is so sweet it could make any man with an iron stomach puke. Sad to say, but this is what sells, and you can't blame the industry because they are just selling what the audience wants to buy. Blame culture and society.
the smartest thing to do is just ignore these sex focused animes and just watch what you want to watch. Find a great story with less sex in it and enjoy it for what it is. Don't buy crap animes or their merchandise, and encourage others to do the same. That's the best you can do on that part.
However defeating the style itself is near impossible, as I said before, sex sells. You just have to hope that there are some anime writers who have a good story to tell once in a while. It is rare but it does happen, the secret is to look at your favorite animes, find out who wrote them and track them. Find out if they are doing any other animes, any other mangas, maybe find out if the studio they worked under does other good animes like the ones you like. Also keep track of your favorite genres, that helps a lot.

I as a male as well am not attracted to anime characters as drawings but rather as characters. There are only two anime girls I have ever been attracted to in my life and ironically both were uncomplimentary in looks, I am attracted to them as characters in the story that they take part in. I have secret crushes on "Ninamori" from FLCL and "Ogiue" from Genshiken. These two characters do not look sexy in the least, but their characters feel realistic and attractive in personality as well as how their roles are important to the story that they are in.
Except for those two characters I live in reality, where the only women for me are real women.
An attractive body is nice, but a great character for a great story is even better.
The problem though with this, is that people would much rather fall in love with an unrealistic character that they wish was real, rather than fall in love with a great story that has some great and attractive characters in it, that they can enjoy as a fun fictional story. Thus the problem with society.

Oh good god...
We're talking about the problems with Over Sexual stories and characters and your example to refute this claim is by using a sex craved character from an incredibly perverted anime that has so many sexual innuendos and references that it would make Sigmund Freud roll over in his grave.
You know what... I think you should just leave.

i am going to blunt and say it, not ever single series out there needs to be LOLOOL deep like Evangelion or Trigun "which I love btw" some people like to watch series like this just for fun and to have a good time. To be fair I hate watching sudo deep stuff now because of how messed up my life and i just like to set back and relax and enjoy myself to a comedy with sexual innuendos, If you don't like series like to love ru or love hina that's fine with me. I will not argue about it I like what i like and believe me I pretty much watch anything.
