Don't know if it has been said on this forum or not, but I'll say it just because it needs to be reiterated. The news picks sensational stories out of society in order to generate ratings/hits etc. They don't care about these people or their circumstances. They usually twist/omit facts to make things seem like epidemics; they are not. When you read an article or watch television, you should look at the story from both sides point of view, taking in all aspects of society from that location. This will give you a much more informed outlook on the world in general and you will be considered LESS stupid for doing so. Commenting after reading one post and not understanding the entire picture makes you yet another misinformed person living in a world of misinformation. I urge everyone to continue to read and understand the nature of this crime, the place in which the crime occurred, and the community in which these people came from before posting.

1. Punishment of this nature fits the crime according to Lithuania.
2. The statistics seem skewed because (as adnwilson put it) "Statistically you have a better chance meeting normal and/or non-killers online than you have meeting killers" this is more common sense than statistics, but whatever. The fact is that if you put billions of people (in this case 700,000+) in a pot and chose one, you would most likely not pick a murderer.

These are also my opinion, so take this how you will. I am just trying to inspire thoughtful response.

I'm sorry but this is not a problem with Online meeting people

This is a problem with people.

If someone has the mentality to go and kill someone, they will do it with or without meeting them online.

^ exactly what i was thinking

Actually... The story is really sad and shocking.. Girl's mother was working in Germany, her father is a driver in LT and hes elder sister studies at the university some 300km away. Yes she has had friends and teachers described her as a very good girl. She told her father that she's going to go to her best friend and stay for the night at her place for the girly talks and etc, and went to the capital city. There she met with that guy and they've spent some time in the city. After they have travelled by bus to his place, and on their walk home soem conflict has happened between them. He tried to rape her, but it is reported, that he hadn't succeed, after what probably he got mad and strangled her. Left her body not even trying to cover it somewhee and took her bag with her belongings.
The next morning when sister discovered, that she wasn't at her friend and that her phone is switched off, everyone got worried, they have started to look for and the same evening the sad story was revealed. It is interesting, that she has left her status update " What to do, when you have to choose". Now what she had to choose probably would never be revealed.
Talking bout the guy- he was dropped out of state schools for several times, he was into riots not once, he was dropped out even from a private school. He lived in a big, nice house with his mother (his parents are divorced) and his grandparents. And his previous teachers described him in a really "bad" way.

So guess it was just incredibly sad circumstances:

the girl was looking for someone she could rely on, you know dates, love, boyfriend- who wasn't dreaming about that...
and the guy probably just got mad if she said something even "normal".. they say even when he chained by police he was strangely calm, no emotions, no tears, nothing...

Survival of the fittest 101

Before, it used to be: Caveman contacts Cavewoman through leaf that says "I want to be your friend, meet me at the cliff". The smarter cavewomen didn't go, but the dumb ones did and they ended up being killed for food.

Meeting people online isn't the problem.
Meeting crazy people, is the problem.
Terrible news :(
It's a shame that he's only getting 10 years.
It should be life.
