yeah it meant happy right?

ya something like that. Thats why its not that big of a deal if someone says "thats so gay" cause what they are really saying is that something is basically stupid. I don't believe its a derogatory to homosexuals, because it was never meant homosexual to begin with.

So, that's not quite true. See this.

See what?

Thank you for this. I'm glad to be learning new things. Teach and learn everyday.

I used to thinking saying gay was no big deal, except that I HATED when other people said it. I was sure that they meant something negative and mean and derogatory towards homosexuals, but it was okay if I said it, because I'm about as straight as a circle. But really, I should be the first person to realize how innocent words and gestures can REALLY affect a person.

Sometimes things WILL seem personal, whether they are or not. And hearing it over and over and over for years... "gay" being associated with stupid, lame, frustrating, something negative, but STILL being associated with homosexuality... it starts to add up in your head, whether you want it to or not. Homosexual = something people don't like, something awful.

I've done my best to be mindful of what I say and how it could affect other people. I'd rather be positive, mature, responsible, calm, thoughtful, and wise in my speech than an ass or someone who casually hurts others. I'm not going to horribly judge someone who says it, but I might let them know what I think of the phrase/usage and what they could try to do to stop saying it and express themselves more effectively.

I don't really think much of it, to me it means the same thing as "that sucks", and I don't think it should be taken wrong by homosexuals, it's just a phrase ...get over it. I know when I say it, it's not meant to be derogative or slandering toward homosexuals. It's the same as when people say "that's sick", their not implying that they think illness is something great, it's just a phrase.

Words change definitions over time, depending on who uses them, and how much. "Gay" as shown above in the link, did not always mean homosexual, and if you look up many other definitions, back in the 1600's DID mean happy and carefree, or lighthearted, and slowly gained the negative connotations.

"Fag" means another thing in other countries, and the ignorant are the ones who changed it and made it what most of us know it as now. When I hear "that's so gay" I equate gay to lame. That's what the majority of people use it as now, and that's what it's changing to. I'd rather it mean lame than something derogatory toward a specific person or persons, wouldn't you?
