Anyone into inducing out of body experiences (OBE's)?

After watching anime's like Mushi-shi and especially Ghost Hound, I've been getting interested in inducing OBE's, but haven't had too much luck. Anyone out there have any experiences with them?

At this point I've only made a few real attempts, mostly at night after having had a nap in the evening (usually don't go to bed until 5-6 in the morning). Thus far, I've had trouble even getting to the hypnagogic state, or vibrational state. (for more info on this, check out http://www.near-death.com/experiences/paranormal11.html).

My method so far: sitting up on the couch, I try to relax every part of my body. I go from my feet to my head, flexing each part for about 15 seconds before letting it relax. After going up and down a couple of times, I try to let go of any physical sensations and keep perfectly still. All the while, focusing on the words "I am going to have an out of body experience".

A couple of times I've gotten to a state where my mind starts drifting and random images/thoughts start coming...but from what I understand the point is to fool the body into going to sleep while keeping your mind active, so I keep re-focusing on the mantra. I feel myself starting to go into a deeper state, and have felt what I believe to be the beginnings of sleep paralysis (feeling the body getting heavier, having an urge to move), but it seems to all go away when I try to re-focus my mind on the mantra/looking into the backs of my eyelids. Additionally, it seems impossible to stop focusing on things like tongue position, and I don't know how to get around having to swallow spit all the time, which I would think would go against the whole "keep perfectly still" thing.

Does anyone out there have any real experiences with inducing OBE's? If so, what advice could you offer to a newcomer? I'm getting better at lucid dreaming, but seem to be at a standstill when it comes to OBE's. I understand that it can take loads of practice before anything is really achieved, but I want to be sure that my attempts are actually fruitful and that there's not something basic that's preventing me from having an OBE.

Well never had an outer body experience per say but I have reached a state where my mind is still completely active and I'm conscious but my body is completely numb or as in doesn't feel as it's there any more, anyway I have only reached this kind of state few times.

You were drunk, laddie. It can make you feel as though you've crossed over into another dimension.

Hmm... that's an interesting observation but totally wrong, for one thing I do not drink as I have better things to do with my money than waste it on booze.

Secondly the term you have just used "laddie" I find highly insulting and as such I bet you don't even know what the term means, because if you did, you wouldn't be calling me it.

Laddie as is lad; young man. And really, we can look up anything on the internet whilst contesting the validity of the source. And alcohol simply stimulates the brain into excreting reward system chemicals and retarding some of its functions. Need I say more?

I accidentally drank some Sulphate Solution a Chem lab when I was 16, Luckily it was nothing highly toxic, But when I hit the ground I felt as if I was floating, whilst still on the ground. I went to hospital, and when I was outside, the wind felt like velvet on my skin. Then I had a drain in my stomach for hours. And put on these pills for 2 weeks.

I'd do it again.

Don't know if said book ( title eludes me) is still in print, but it was a how to book, --I think.
If not for sale, see if you can find this subject at a library. It was about how to meditate out of the body to "visit" places in the present (real time) while leaving the body behind. Apparently the proof was having heard or seen something too far from the body's location to have access.

I hear that you're supposed to keep your mind completely blank. Just float.

It's hard though. >< I haven't been successful either. It'd be nice for traveling on the cheap, hehe.

There was a study of OBE's in UK hospitals to determine if it's possible (since the frequency of OBE's are higher in hospitals). Apparently it should definitively prove or disprove OBE because it's involving a large sample size. Results are expected in 2012. My source was QI.

I have strange lucid dreams...

sometimes I am on horseback, with a raven flying above me, sometimes I am young, and sometimes an ugly hag, a salmon, a wolf,
washing bloody tunics in a river of souls...a sidhe...
but I feel like I have flown....somewhere....

i've had one, MAYBE two.

1; i was practicing (repeatedly) a 'figure' (which is like a sequence of 'technical" required moves) and i was starting it again, and i just did it kinda automatically. but it was kinda unconscious~consciousness? and i was definitely not feeling like i was in my body or mind..? it's kinda hard to describe, b/c i was really really concentrating on doing it well, but suddenly, it was kinda like a flipswitch and i was just able to do that figure well. and after i finished it and snapped back, i couldnt do it as well =_=

the 'maybe 2' is when i kinda half woke up in the middle of the night, i was fully aware of what i was doing, but i wasn't thinking about doing it, and i couldn't stop it either, and after it, i went back to sleep, woke up and THEN really realized it had actually happened.
