wrong - I watch american shows but I'm not a fan - there's a difference and the question says "What makes you a true anime fan?" just saying "just by watching" it isn't enough - maybe if you've watch 50+ titles maybe that' acceptable.

In any case - I'm trying to start a good discussion here so please answer nicely - cuz most of the anime "fans" I see are those people who thinks they're anime, they mimic anime character voices for everyday use and uses it as their normal voice which is not, wearing bunny ears, cat ears, cosplaying everyday - that's just crazy in my opinion, they don't love/like anime, they live anime -

I want to know if there are still people out there who are in decent mind to love anime for what it is and not being a fan of anime/ loving anime by trying to become one of them.

Someone who watches shows, isn't afraid to tell that to other people, and obsesses over it, but only for specific shows. Weeaboos DO NOT COUNT. You also have to have a basic understanding of what the fandom/fangirlies are.

If you want nice answers you should ask nicely. Your OP and this post puts clear value judgments on other people. Most people don't like being judged. You say 'True Fan' like it should be a badge of honour. Then you go on to tell the casual watcher that they are not elite enough to join the club, but on the other hand all those cosplayers and such... you say they're just too weird.

Seems to me you're being very narrow and judgmental. That isn't very nice. And doesn't encourage niceness in response.

I have been watching anime for more than 25 years. I have seen over 2000 series. On top of that I know of anime most of the people hear will never ever have the chance to see.

SO yes I like Japanese Cartoons, but I am not obsessed with it to the point where I feel the need to act stupid in public acting like some retarded freak all drooling over some animated character. So yes I am a true fan, I have respect for animated shows. But I am no loser who has no life outside of cartoons. (I hate Otaku they make anime fans look bad.)

Fans are not the same thing as Otaku.

respecting something, liking something is not the same thing as obsessing over it like some drug addict!

I don't hate otakus or anyone who displays their affection for anime publicly, but I agree, it's not my thing. I just try to watch as much anime as I can. I've seen some of your posts Darkphoenix and it seems like you're very educated about anime and I dig that. I think to absorb everything is a true sign of an anime fan. Sure, you'll come across some crap anime but the good ones easily make up for it. I also support the industry when I think it's necessary. I'm not going to buy volume after volume of a series, but when I see a good price for a series I'll purchase it. So, I may not be the most die-hard or the fan with the biggest collection but I realize what anime means to me as a person and how much I enjoy watching it and I think that is what really counts, ha!

if you liked it and appreciated it. you don't need to be obsessed to it to be called a fan.
