This is really sad we are suposed to be in a modern age! we had a thing in the UK called happy slapping or something, were gangs would go round and film someone getting slapped in the face. What ever happened to knock-a-door run?

Sure. and utterly bogus.

To address some of the other things you said in your first post, that you left out in your second:

My comparisons to the issues of race and religion are not invalid. Race, religion and sex (specifically including gender expression and sexual orientation) are equally protected on under the same human rights clauses and codes . At least here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (each level of government has weighed in on the general issue of human rights)

In the examples I gave, no physical harm was done to people (although there was property damage) so as you put it, "only feelings were hurt" but in all three cases the actions taken were, as you stipulated, hate crimes, and outside the accepted norms of society in my country.

I can go no further on this because frankly I can't fathom a reasoned argument out of that post.

As for the post quoted above.

I don't care at all until it happens? -- uh.. Well duh I also don't care about being hit by a car or getting struck by lightning until it happens. Doesn't mean I don't take precautions and one of those precautions when what happens is the result of anti-social behaviour is to let the perpetrators and everyone who might think it's cool, or okay, in on the knowledge that, on no uncertain terms, it is neither Cool nor Okay.

And weather I care or not, how does minding my own business until something like this is brought to my attention make me as bad in any way as someone who goes out and deliberately assaults someone, who may or may not be gay, on the presumption that it's funny to attack gay people in order to ruin their clothes and their day.

That's like saying someone who locks their door and stays home on Halloween is just as bad as the people who toilet paper police cars and set fire to dumpsters. It makes no sense.

As for your Fury, calm down son. You jumped in here to tell us we're wrong to be upset about these events. I challenged you to justify your statements that it was okay because it wasn't assault and murder (by that logic, teasing and bullying are okay as long as the bullies don't draw blood) and the statement that we were 'coddling' the gay community by being upset.

It's not my fault that in response to my challenge you couldn't string a coherent sentence together. Direct your Fury at your English teacher.

RE: Self - taught English. Good for you then, Seriously. There are people with university credentials who do not write as well as you. (at least you recognize that 'you' is a three letter word for example) You should take that exemplary skill to a books store or library and check out a couple of books on writing. Seriously. If you're self taught, then one book like strunk and wagnels will probably give you everything you need to be a validictorian.

RE: Brains and Baseball Bats - Fortunately I have not seen the above. Nor has it been reported in this country in recent memory. If something like that happened here even the gay haters would stand aside and let our justice system lock those 'friends' up for life.

The point here, is that the situation you describe happens because we let people treat other people as less than human. It's not cool to throw slushies on anyone. But if the perpetrators think it's "okay because they're only attacking gays" then that implied assumption that gays do not deserve equal protection under the law and society's approval is the first step towards that baseball bat. And THAT is why this is an issue.

?? If you're talking to me, I have a life where I do things other than go and speak to people like you. Why should we feel glad they aren't sacrificing themselves? They are still doing something wrong to people and society and if the people are crazy enough, they can go kill themselves because of it. I'm a girl, you idiot. Seriously that is offense if you even meant to call me a guy, because anyone can see I'm clearly not. You should never feel glad that nothing worse is happening, because something worse is happening and it might turn into a bigger problem. Right of speech or not, I said it because I feel like your acting like that. What are you talking about? One of my friends gets beaten by Belts, Glass, Kitchen wooden Spoons and other things and doesn't speak but she doesn't feel glad about these things.

You should never feel glad because something might be wrong with them, and some people are nuts ( I'm going to say it again ) and to kill themselves because of it. Bad is Bad. Good is Good.

This is bad for people who are gay, because slushies are terrifying to everyone and I bet they're not some lovely treatment, and they hurl insults like 'faggot' at them. That hurts. They can be hurt emotionally and physically. I find this as them trying to hurt them emotionally and physically, and do you know where they are? If they are even hurt right now? Then no, don't make such statements as it would be better if they got slushied than in the hospital because they are both bad in equal ways.

Yes I'm self taught i could not read write or speak English for the most part of my life in fact i could not read any language until i was in sixth grade people had to show me images and act things out for me to catch on then after a long time of home study and in school study and a lot of effort i was able to speak it then in the seventh grade i was able to write it and read it still poorly though. But on a side not i apologize to you and everyone on here that i was a baffoun and belligerent to and for my ramblings for trying to argue with you and them. oh and the boys were tried as adults and sent to the prison for life and the whole thing was on the news here about five years ago and my old school dedicated a track/football field to him.

I agree with Papagolfwhiskey. All of you guys who think this is just a kiddie prank obviously need to review your history. What usually starts as a prank targeting a minority group always ends up as terrorism. The Ku Klux Klan started off as a prank group but they eventually became a terrorist organization who tortured and killed African Americans in heinous ways.

Other great examples to review are the WW2 Holocaust and the treatment of Chinese Americans and Native Americans. What often starts as a simple racist word evolved to murder in all of those cases.

Remember, in the Western countries, discrimination always leads to death unless good people stand up to oppose it.

I while I agree with you that I shouldn't be glad just because nothing worse happened. I cannot agree with the idea that getting a drink thrown on oneself is in any way as bad as getting hospitalized. Sorry, that makes no sense either. I'll grant you that there is more harm done than just ruined clothes and a bad day. I'll grant you that there is fear when you think you're being targeted. I think my earlier posts have made it clear that I find such behaviour unacceptable all the more so because it appears to be targeted at a specific group in violation of their human rights... but I cannot, Can Not agree that getting drenched in icy sugar water is in any way equal to being attacked in a way that requires hospitalization. One is bad, unacceptable even. However, the other is far worse. One is a subject for school and parental discipline maybe an offense on summary conviction( I think "public mischief" would apply). The other is an Indictable Offense, a crime. (aggravated assault)

The KKK was never a prank group. They were pretty serious from the get go, but I understand what you are getting at. Small offenses get people used to an idea that it is OK to treat some groups of people worse. It is a slippery slope.

It's more than that even. 'Small' offences are often part of a larger pattern of abuse and intimidation. At the risk of invoking Godwin's law I reference you to "Kristallnacht" (Night of the Broken Glass). This was primarily an event over 'only' property damage but it was no prank, Nor in hindsight do we consider it an unplanned step on a slippery slope. It was a deliberate escalation in a cause that ultimately ended in the Holocaust.

Are the slushies the same as Kristallnacht? No... but... Such acts are not necessarily as random or meaningless as the apologists for such behaviour would like to make out either.

Nice try, but NO. We are just protecting them because they are humans, the fact they are gay is just a detail. We are not "coddling" them because they are gay, we are "coddling" them because they are human. No one should be bullied like that, especially for such a stupid little reason, ok?

You see, it's not the media's fault that your child is an idiot.

No, the problem here lies with the parents who allow their bastard kids to go out and terrorize a community all because they're too fucking unfit to monitor them.

I say every person who was attacked by these asswipes should form a group, chase them down, and beat the ever loving shit out of them. Fuck sitting them down and talking, get a good left hook to the jaw.

Now this all sounds extremely violent, but I'm tired of hearing stories like this.

It's not always the parents fault that kids end up like this.
If you were a parent you would know that a person can't possibly watch their child 24/7 no matter how much they want to.

[Emphasis Mine]

Yep. We can, our high schools can leave emotional scars similar to any in American experience. The nice Canadian is a myth; A myth we sometimes try to live up to but a myth the same. Sometimes we are the worst kind of mean: the smugly superior mean that loves that oh so inferior person we are being mean to anyway.
