It’s no surprise that there is a very small amount of black, or multi-racial characters in most anime, however, lately I have been thinking what if an anime was created where most the main characters were black, instead of being side-character who usually don’t have the spotlight.
Do you feel an anime like this would attract the attention of most anime fans, or only mainly attracted the attention of black anime fanatics? Or would it simply cause too much controversy? I am currently in the process of creating an anime with black main characters and test this theory.
How well do you predict such an anime would become in popularity?

I think if you based an anime off of a character like Simon "The black Russian" from Durarara, it could end up being pretty popular. I really don't think that making a main character black would be a big problem for anime fans. As long as its an anime that has a good story and the characters are made well, it would end up being popular.

I think that the current state of character ethnicity choices is a reflection of what the creators see every day where they live. They might not see "multi-racial" people that often and more so, might not understand those people enough to give an accurate representation.

I think that once the world mixes together a bit more, we'll see Manga and Anime stories with far more character racial variety, definitely something to look forward to :)

I personally feel it would not change much story-wise however, because regardless of a character's skin color, the writer will give the character whatever personality and quirks they want.

I wouldn't see a reason for controversy, unless they start using intense negative stereotypes of every ethnicity.

Regarding your Anime, it all depends on how well you can write a story and hook the reader's attention. If your story is written well, and you keep focus of your target audience when writing, it will certainly gain popularity.

As long as those particular characters don't look like something out of a banned 1950's cartoon then why not? Which was a reason why I never watched Durarara: because Simon disturbed me.

Everyone wants there race to be potrayed (somewhat) positively, so seeing more diversity in anime would be nice. How and why should that be controversial?

Mitchiko to Hatchin , Mitchiko is a great black skin lead. This whole anime focus on the slums ,poverty and etc. Not being racist but this anime has a lot of black people. I love pepe lima to bad she died from a bullet by a kid which made me realize that not all anime's leave off on a positive note. .

When older animes depicted characters with African nationalities or features, they often looked like, as LosingOrbit described, the sort of horrid cartoons white racists used to make fun of and subjugate blacks in the South during the 1950's and 1960's. Dragonball is a great example of this. I think, over the last couple of decades, the depiction of blacks by Japanese animators and anime character designers has gotten much better. The most recent black characters aren't reliant on old American 50's stereotypes. Still, I haven't seen one as a lead character, but then you don't really see that in the United States, either. The default character design for Japan is the Japanese schoolboy (just as the default U.S. animation character is a white boy). I've only seen one animation series in the U.S. with a large multiracial cast and a black lead, and that was Static. I do like Dutch, as he is one serious wall o' muscle AND has enough cool to keep his wits about him while verbally sparring with a Neo-Nazi geezer halfway around the world. But Black Lagoon's characters were all well-written, no matter what their race.

There is Elean who worked at the Daily Days newspaper in New York in Baccano. He was black, and then there's Samantha, the Genoard family maid, she was black as well.
