None of the choices I've read so far really seem to define "worst" when it comes to defining how bad an anime is. Most are just mildly bad and the rest seem to fall in the realm of personal taste. However, there is one anime that can definately rank as a true heavyweight in terms of the worst anime of all time, and that anime is Fortune Quest. Since I started watching anime way back in 1997, this is the only anime that I had to stop watching after one episode. And this was a rental, so its not like it just wasted my time like some bad animes I download sometimes do, but it wasted my money too. The DVD cover art looked interesting enough and I had never heard of it so I thought that maybe this could be a little hidden gem. Bad move. The stock characters, forgetable music, bland animation, the story (wait.... was there one?), and stupid attempts at humor plagued this anime. Mind you, this is all in the first episode. The worst thing about this anime was that it was so freaking boring. Even some bad anime out there will try something to make up for how bad a episode is be it a nice little action sequence, some fan service, some horrific gore, a talking cat, you know, SOMETHING. Not Fortune Quest. They never waivered in this titular piece of crap. It was pure torture getting through that first episode, I think the running time was lying to me. I try to give all anime at least a few episodes before I give up on them, but the next episode preview looked like more of the same and I just couldn't handle that so I pushed stop. So I basically wasted $2.50 on 20 to 30 minutes of a crappy anime, but I wasn't about to waste anymore of my time. A lot of you reading this are probably like, "What the hell is Fortune Quest?" My answer, "Exactly."

Fortune Quest, really?

I have Fortune Quest on DVD-just picked it up because I thought it looked cute. It's bland and cliche yeah.....but it's far from the "worst anime ever". Didn't find anything remarkably bad or remarkably good about it. It's just....mediocre. But not torture to watch..... o_O

There's been some videos I've watched with very low expectations. For example, there was a late 90s anime film (OAV?) based on the Tekken video games. Rented it for free, expecting nothing more than fighting and absurd plot. That's what I got.

But as for stuff where I had decent or high expectations, well...

* Utena: Adolescence Rush. Yeah, the movie loosely based on the Utena anime and manga. I admired the anime series, because it constantly surprised me with plot twists, and its ridiculous "The walrus was Paul" approach to symbolism. And while the manga series was unremarkable, it was enjoyable. The movie, umm... kinda went off the deep end. It's been at least ten years since I rented it, and I still remember several scenes that made me groan or throw my hands up in despair.

* Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals. This is what taught me that I shouldn't buy a video sight unseen! I paid $25 for a videotape with two of the four episodes. It was quite bad. Few likable characters, a plot that just sort of spiraled out of control, and no clear connection to the main FF games. (It's actually a distant sequel to Final Fantasy 5, but I didn't realize that for a while. FF5 doesn't have much plot.)

OH GOSH.
Afro Samurai, Astarotte's Toy, We Without Wings, Kiss x Sis (OVAs) and Hellsing (not the OVAs).

I make it a goal not to ever drop an anime. I need to start choosing wiser.

The worse of them all is One Piece, obviously.

A close second would be Detective Conan.

I think both are pretty popular in Japan but I still think they suck hard.

There was an anime on adultswim ages ago, I can't even remember the name anymore but I definately remember that it was awful. It was about a school of mech pilots or something.

Anyway I watched the whole thing hoping it was going to eventually get better and boy was that a waste of life. It's the only anime I can remember outright hating, probably because I forced myself to watch the whole thing long after I decided it sucked.

I wonder if anyone else here is old enough to remember that... dang I feel old

Aha! found it - Pilot Candidate or The Candidate for Goddess. Bleh.

Oh I dared! So I'm not the only one on here who remembers that one. Sorry to resurrect the memory but hey, this is the "worst anime you've watched" thread and it's definitely a fitting addition to the list.

Absolute worst will always go to the basic harem animes. Weak guy with no spine or redeeming quality is surrounded by a loli, medium size, and legendary sized breasted women... some are ditzy, some are long forgotten friends from childhood who never got over the person they met for 1 day... add in some fan service, typical beach and bath scenes... and you've got a huge pile of crap ready to sell!

Personal least favorite are the action series like DBZ, Bleach, etc... I hate how the bad guys announce that the good guy is their supreme enemy, then feed him countless underlings so he can get stronger and learn his powers while they sit around lurking in darkness ((I'm talking about you Inuyasha!)) While these series may be fine with decent animation, good voice acting, hell... even good fluff storylines... the stupidity of the bad guy who refuses to make the killing blow for 300+ episodes just infuriates me.

But, if a series has the ability to make you think beyond what they say in the brief episode, or causes you to go research an idea for yourself then I am an unwavering fan. Few people have knocked on Suzumiya Haruhi, and I understand why... but so far that series is the first to truly jog my brain and i want more.

Oh, and Bebop rocks! Space Jazz FTW!
