In my experience, animations and cartoons are aired in the morning to the afternoon in my local television without cable and such. I do get PBS cartoons that airs all afternoon.

But most anime are not simply not that juvenile. When do they air in Japan?

Most likely throughout the whole day. There are different anime aired on timeblocks. noitanimA usually airs theirs at late night, between 11 P.M. - 1 A.M. If you want to know the time CrunchyRoll's simulcasts air in Japan, the best thing to do is subtract 12 hours from them, assuming those anime are in Tokyo.

It really depends on the Network, since some animes get broadcast more than once. It also depends on the demographic of the animes. Mature content would usually be broadcast at late hours. Animes that appeal to young children are during the day. I don't think they're much different from American broadcasting.
