(cuz if they were, 20 mins per episode x 60 sec per min x 20 fps x 198 episodes -50% for reused cels for dialogue and op/ed = 3276000 handpainted cels. And that's just for shippuden.) </geekout>

An original frame was taken from the animation, then hand-painted and created on a cel (transparent sheet). This is original art created for collectors and fans. To answer the prize question, for runner ups and honorable mentions, there will be a variety of Naruto items and grab bags worth up to $50. We'll throw a plushie in there since it's been requested Contest ends February 22 at 11:59PST. Keep those entries coming, especially "Show Us Your Ninja Moves"!

A cel is the shortened name of a celluliod. A cel is transparent and painted on then put under a camera and filmed. Past anime used cel animation. Most current anime such as Naruto uses CG animation, computer generated, which doesn't use cels. However, reproduction cels (cels made post production and not used in the actual anime) are made of what the animators considered to be "key" moments (frames) in the anime. There are 5 repros cels made of each image unlike a production cel where there would only be one made of a frame. The "cels" in this contest are actually reproduction cels. If you want to learn more about cels, the best thing to do is go check out where the cel collectors hang. I'm a cel collector. The hot spots are rubberslug.com and anime-beta.com to learn more. There are many other places too but that's a good start if you want more info. Good luck to any entering the contest!
