Tell me all about your start in Anime
Posted 2/17/11
My start into anime was with shows like Go Lion (Voltron) and Robetech (Macross). I never really knew what they were, but I knew I liked giant fighting robots.

Several years pass and they start to air G-Force (Gatchaman). I was fascinated and watched it as much as I could when I got home. I got so excited when it came on. I remember seeing commercials for it on TV at school a few times when they had the TV on and wanted to talk to other about it but though they'd call me a dork for watching something like it. I don't know why, but I did.

Several years later on a saturday I catch some clips of a new show that caught my attention. It was called Sailor Moon. I made every effort to be able to sit and watch it when it came on in the morning. I loved it, but I felt so wrong for watching it. After all it was a show that was much more oriented towards girls. I also watched Samurai Pizza Cats around that time after my brother mention something about it. Then my siblings and I all got out exposure to Anime togeather for a while.

Fast forward a little bit more and here comes, you guessed it, Dragon Ball Z. I was in awe. A show boys could ever dream of. It was around that time that I also started to surf the web and as you can guess I finally was able to understand what anime actually was. I loved it. Cartoons from Japan. I wanted more and got more with shows like Pokemon, Digimon, Medabots, etc.

I got greedy, though, so I did like everyone else who liked anime and started to watch subbed series. My first and only sub for a while was .hack//Sign. I only watched what my sister downloaded, so it wasn't until later that I was able to watch some of the Rockman.EXE series. That was followed by Bleach up to a number of episodes and then Keroro Gunsou.

Then streaming came along and I stopped completely. I didn't really know what sites were good and decided against it. Then I was shown Crunchy, which I avoided because I didn't want to skim through all the series to find ones I could watch since some were taken down. Eventually I got the urge to come check it out and found Crunchy had become a legal streaming site for anime. And the rest of the story from there is predictable. Added series to watchlist, watched them, and thus started my true addiction.

I've been watching anime like Dragon Ball Z casually all of my life. Only when I happened to read the American manga "Megatokyo" one boring summer day at home did I realize how awesome anime really is. I have been watching anime devotedly ever since.

I first started at a very young age, back then, I watched Toonami, Cartoon Network, and Adult Swim, they had kick-@$$ anime like G Gundam, Dragon Ball/Z(which hit me the most), Pokemon(season 1,2,& 3), Cowboy Bebop, Big O with some decent anime Hamtaro, IPGX, so on,& the latter of Toonami's lifespan came One Piece, Naruto(despise it at first, but gave it a second chance), & Prince of Tennis(which I never really gave a chance, I'll probably give it one later).

Your story sounds similar to my own. Probably because we both saw the same stuff on Cartoon Network in the mid 90s.

I knew what anime was with all the hullabaloo about DBZ and Pokemon back in the day, but didn't start seriously start watching anime until a year ago. I started with InuYasha for some reason and friggin' loved it. Sure it's got its flaws but it was an awesome way to start so no regrets.

Ever since I was like 3 years old, we do like watching anime and my very first anime that I've watched is Yaiba in Filipino dubbed and Mojacko as my most favorite anime because of the cuteness of all the characters. Then in 2004, I was looking for a new toy that is truly awesome and on December, my wish has granted with triple celebration because 1) my mom bought me the Aile Strike Gundam of Gundam Seed, 2) the premier of Gundam Seed Filipino dubbed on TV, and 3) it's Christmas day! >_< 2005 is the year of the anime 'cause Hero TV, a Pinoy anime channel, launched in August with the hit series of Mirmo De Pon, Naruto, re-run of The Slayers and Gundam Seed, and so much more.

But then in 2006, after I'd finished all episodes of Eureka Seven and Beck Mongolian Chop Squad on TV and my dad bought me a PS2, I started to loose my interest in anime and the reason why I do not like anime anymore. In 2008, a brand new channel TV5 launched in August with all-new local shows and anime such as Shakugan No Shana and Yamato Nadeshiko The Wallflower (all in filipino dubbed) but unfortunately I didn't find any good and interesting shows. In 2009, I bought a few anime magazines, and even though TV5 launches more popular anime shows such as Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Special A, Code Geass, Toradora, Azumanga Daioh and more but I didn't like them all.

On January 2010, when I started posting in the forum, I found a cute signature of an anime girl named Tsukasa but didn't know what anime was that. I asked my sister and she told me that is Lucky Star, an old anime from 2007. On March 2010, because of a user from forum created a topic regarding Lucky Star OVA and made me curious to that anime; A new issue of anime magazine features Lucky Star on their top 5 anime; and recently launched that show on TV in filipino dubbed, Lucky Star had changed back my interest in anime after 4 years of forgetting anime. I find myself that one night after watching the first episode of Lucky Star on TV, I'm having insomnia because of the cuteness of the anime. Now I'm trying to retrieve some of my memories but I have to start again from the scratch.

Until now, I have no idea why do I love cute animes.

Sorry for my english.

well it was December 1995, I was 9 at the time, it might have been a Tuesday, I had woken up earlier than usual so I went to watch some tv with my breakfast before preparing for school, I was flipping channels when I put WB11 and saw Sailor Moon, it was my first look at anime, I became fascinated, it looked different than the average cartoon at the time plus it had hot babes so I continued watching and was hooked, not long after that I started watching speed racer and other classic animes, I also discovered sci-fi channel's "saturday anime" where they showed a different anime movie every week. By '97 I was renting and buying anime vhs tapes any chance I got. I was not easy to find anime until pokemon and dbz made it more popular, then came Toonami followed by Adult Swim great times, coming home from school and putting on toonami became my weekday ritual, I also became hooked on early adult swim, and the rest was history. Now I just watch my anime online and read manga online or watch my dvd's, I stopped watching AS in 2008 and I don't regret it, it's not the same as it used to be. well that's it in a nutshell I guess.

this is a picture of my first episode of sailor moon, the one that started it all

Now that you mention it, I remember on USA's "Action Extreme Team" they did have Sailor Moon, but I never really watched it on there because the commercials for it seemed so directed at females. And this was well before Toonami and DBZ were a big thing. I wonder how my tastes might differ if I'd seen Sailor Moon first

I have been watching since I was young, not sure my exact age, but I went to a friends house and he put in Ranma 1/2. That was the first anime I had ever seen. When I really started watching regularly was on Toonami, with shows like Dragonball Z, Salior Moon, Gundam. Things like that, I watched toonami till it went off air, then started watching on adult swim. Since then I usually still watch adult swim stuff, but now I watch most stuff here and through renting from hastings and netflix. That was how I got into anime really.
