So I am unemployed and have less than $100 with Chase at the moment. While it is unlikely, I am considering trying to make money by doing YouTube videos.

My question is, how do people on YouTube like realannoyingorange make big bucks? I know it's having talent and doesn't happen to everyone. But how do these people (Some YouTubers are your everyday tax-paying loser that achieves success). I mean, I looked at a list of YouTubers last week and it said that they can make five to six figures with their success. But how would I go about making any money? For me, I realistically would want several hundred to high four/low five figures. Like I said, it is unlikely that will happen. However, what are your opinions on how I should try to do it?

My opinion...

Go get student loans and go to college.

Bare in mind that it took half those YouTube users at least 5 years to get that many hits so its a long waiting game.

Not to mention if whatever video you make is good enough. You can't really re-create their success, for example you can never be double rainbow guy, it has to be something original.

Ad revenue is the majority of it. Succeed in getting into the Partner program, and then begin getting money through ads you can put on your video. Thus viewer hits equates to money, you'll want lots of views. However for YouTubers that go really big, like Tay Zonday, you may actually get companies offering you big deals.

So as Chained_Angel explained, it is a waiting game. If in theory you could be a Partner from day 1, you would be making less than a dollar a day when you first start out. Ad revenue is very slim, but getting millions of views can make it add up greatly. Building up a large audience and good revenue takes a long time. You won't be able to be a full time YouTuber any time soon, it isn't money you can live off of so easily.

If you want to be making money there, you need to start asap rather than wait around.

I'll also note it's probably easiest to try making money with comedy. I don't mean going on camera and doing standup comedy. I mean take your talent, and use it in a funny way. I think MysteryGuitarMan is a perfect example. His talent is music, but he's always pretty funny. In the past year, his success has led to multiple companies hiring him to do commercials.

be creative I guess,
please don't hurt youself and make a 'funny' video out of it (that's what most people do)
here an great idea~ start training your toes so that you can either draw or write with them, it will make you popular for sure~
once you're popular I guess commercial sponsor will come get you
well, in my opinion doing that way you may have 000,1 % chance to success

Youtube is kindof a silly way to make money unless it's your second "job" or you live with your parents or you're already rich. But it's a bit like getting into acting, it's a gamble and there's not that much chance that you'll get enough money to support yourself.

I also highly doubt the six figure thing, unless it's like one person. Most people probably earn very little from youtube, like a little extra spending money.
