Why Is the World So Shallow When it Comes to Looks?
Posted 3/9/11
it's the consequence of having a fucked up perception of what perfect is.

Marketing companies. The media has basically defined what "sexy" and "girly" and "manly" and "ugly" mean and it's getting to our heads. Why can't people just be happy with themselves? Besides, everyone is beautiful and ugly in their own way. Does that make sense?

Makeup only makes us look less human than we are. With these fake surgery fake asses XD....fake everything nothing is real anymore. Nudity and america is a problem I don't understand why I mean Its the human body nothing more nothing less. I don't really know why people overact so much to these things I just XD Actually everytime I see a streaker I cheer them on GO AHEAD MAN GET YOUR BALLS SOME AIR! LOLOL

The more you try to blend with the way society wants you to be, the less you have of yourself. (I hope that makes sense )

If you try to force your way into the social scene by doing whatever it takes to fit in, your just attempting to please everyone. Which is inherently impossible. My plan is to be myself and see who accepts me for it. Those who don't can choose not to. I can control their opinions.

When I was younger I cared if I was found attractive or not and I don't think anyone was "interested" in me because I thought that way. Now I am much older and care very little about my appearance but rather how I appear(Nice or mean, happy or sad, etc.) now there are more girls that actually talk to me. Now I just need to work on not getting shy around girls and being quiet. CRUEL WORLD!!!1

It all has to do with the desire to mate. The opposite sex is attracted to certain physical attributes. It is natural to want to enhance those attributes when searching for a suitable mate. All of this is hard wired into our DNA and it has been the same since the dawn of man.

Similar behavior can be observed in other animals on the planet, such as birds, reptiles and other mammals.

All of this was taken straight from the Discovery Channel btw.

edit:
Oh, and in response to your question, no, it does not REALLY matter about personality or even mentality. Looks are physical and reach into the most primitive part of our brains. I suggest you query Sigmund Freud's research to get a sense of why we don't TRULY care about personality deep down. It is only an illusion that we have to put ourselves through in order to be considered "normal" in society. The super-ego set boundaries on our ego/id in order to participate in civilization. Not to say that SF's theories are all that, of course, they are questionable in and of themselves, but this train of thought would help explain why the world is what it is...

As to why we are shallow:
We are probably evolving past the need for a conscience; or we are not being taught well by our society; or we are loosening the restrictions on what is "normal and acceptable" in society. In other words, society is either getting infinitely more efficient, or becoming a burden on our mentality and is breaking down on an person-to-person basis... Thinking about it philosophically that is...

Looks cause the Erection.

Not how much you know about space and hair styling.

i agree! I'm not pretty, im not ugly, im pretty average looking, and at some point the "oh yeah well you're ugly!" reply doesn't work anymore. It's pretty annoying. To be truthful, when i hear some girls talk., im ashamed to be a girl. there are girls, who all they do is trash other girls, and honestly, they think no one hears them when they are practially shouting about how they think someone is ugly or fat or annoying. I've noticed that they trash some of the nicest people i know. It makes me feel ashamed to also be a girl when i hear them.

^ If they're "practically shouting" it then I'm sure they want to be heard. Why be ashamed of being a girl cause of some gossip queens? Just learn to pity the ones not worth your time.

My opinion hasn't changed. When it comes to something important as a relationship I'm not going to be with someone I'm not attracted to. Personality is great but that doesn't take a higher priority to me.

It's because of the way we were raised and brought up.

nothing wrong with admiring and loving beautiful people.. it's only nature.. to be attracted to the physical best of a species.. there is absolutely nothing wrong with it... people that thing there is.. well they're confusing issues.. if looks are the only thing considered.. well that's not right.. but it is an important consideration.. people don't purposely go out and try to get an "ugly" version of something.. they get stuff they consider beautiful.. now some opinions will differ on what is beautiful.. but that doesn't change the fact people prefer something beautiful..

Best responses so far.

It's impossible to please everyone. You cannot accomplish that and it will drive a person into lunacy. Plus you'll be ignoring your wishes. And it's a fact, everyone does inherently go for what's beautiful... that can be a myriad of things.

Ha, well at least you're not a boy. Then you'd be doubly ashamed.

And I agree with CABarrett. Physical attraction is just that - physical. It's all about reproducing and spreading the genes, baby.
