people it's not the end of the damn world use your brains for once oh wait I forgot most people here are Americans "even my self' and critical thought is not a damn strong point. This happens all the time and when it does it causes major effects on the oceans, tides etc. This was bound to happen in this cycle because the moon keeps the waves and oceans in check on the planet, without it there wold be worse tsunami's that world has not seen in over 3 million years, why do you think the tide is always stronger during a full moon as well? Enough with the damn rant believe what you want to, i don't give a f***

Isn't the moon technically always full? We just can't see it because the sun isn't lighting up the other side.

The way I see it, it'll just be a pretty sight. Although it is possible the tides will be higher

The reason that a full moon (or new moon) has effects on tides has to do with the relative position of the moon and the sun. When the moon is full or new, the moon and sun are aligned with the earth, resulting in higher high tides than when the moon, earth, and sun form a 90 degree angle. Since the earthquake and tsunami in Japan occured fairly close to a half moon, I expect that the tsunami could have been much worse if it had occured at the same time as a full or new moon, at least in terms of the size of the swell. I don't know if that is the case though...

Maybe the tsunami... Maybe. But I doubt the moon has anything to do with Earth's seismic activity.

Heh, I will be sitting out front on my lawn watching the big moon with some buds and some fishcakes if this does happen. Perfect night, even if there is a possibility that we'll all die. Seems like the best way to die, eh?
