Good to know that limited HD may come to Roku, but there is no reasonable excuse as to why CrunchyRoll streams 1080p to Apple products only. I have paid for a service, so there is no reason that I should be expected to be locked into a particular third party's products to get what I have paid for on CrunchyRoll. It is short sighted and old fashioned of CrunchyRoll to side with a specific company and consequently limit the rest of their paying customers who choose to not use that other company's products.

Hopefully there are technical reasons for the limitation and they plan on delivering 1080p to each platform. However, this seems to have been an issue for awhile now with Apple and Android devices and now I see that the limitation is also effect on the Roku device. This isn't a good look for CrunchyRoll. Considering how long this has been an issue on these two platforms it makes me question if Roku will ever see 1080p streams.

If this is the result of some sort of deal that they've made with Apple, then I don't see CrunchyRoll being competitive. Other services stream anime - not just Netflix, but anime-specific services - and you can bet that they will be getting into the market of mobile and services like Roku. They will be offering 1080p streams where CrunchyRoll does not. In fact,they may already do so. I haven't had cause to look until now, but I will be looking at other options.

Abitrary limitations do not work in today's market.

The Roku 3 was delivered today so I will be looking into my options and comparing CR to those options. Hopefully my concern is misplaced and the Roku 3 will see 1080p streams.

I think that it may be important to note that my desktop PC died (hardware failure), but between my game consoles and tablet I'm not so sure that it's worth my time (and money) to get it working again. As it turns out I don't seem to be able to get CrunchyRoll in HD which, as we know, is a big selling point for their premium subscriptions. Which makes me wonder if it'll be worth while to resubscribe to CR.

I wasn't sure if I was going to resub after they were bought out because I was concerned about the future of CrunchyRoll, but I now I see no appealing value even if that doesn't cause problems with CRs quality. What exactly am I paying for if I can't get the shows in HD on any of my devices? No commercials? That's nice but it's not a huge issue. I wait a week to watch an episode, but I don't think that's a big deal either. I have Netflix for some anime that CR doesn't carry, and it streams in HD and it's commercial free.

Not looking good, CR.

First of all, Apple TV supports crunchyroll in 1080p, which means it will go to your HDTV.

Second, according to a staff member, an update was submitted to roku about 20 days ago which will support HD (though it's unclear whether that will be 720 or 1080) and we are waiting for roku to accept or deny it. An update was submitted a few months ago as well and was denied, so not sure how it will go this time, but over in the help!->roku section of the forum, we're all hoping for good news!

* Recognize the characteristics of a sense of entitlement and understand where it comes from.
* Accept that you are not going to be able to meet all of the needs of any person... Acknowledge the good you do, without beating up on yourself for having sensible limits.

I JUST got my roku box and i installed the crunchyroll channel on it. it's not prompting me to log in. I can't find the login link and hitting the asterisk button on the remote ( * ) does nothing.

How do I log into my account on this thing?

Did you go all the way to the bottom under settings? There should be a link accounts thing there.

You don't, you link it to your account.

As mentioned above, scroll to the bottom of the main screen and you will see "Link Account". Click that and follow the directions. After you are successful, that icon will change to "Unlink Account" and you will have access to your queue.

I agree 100% -- the new GUI is TERRIBLE. Many if the controls are non-intuitive (press Play to access the main menu!?) and there’s no way (that I can find) to go from a “currently viewing” episode in my Queue to the main series page (this is particularly frustrating when the current episode doesn’t update after watching an episode). If anyone knows how to do this, please enlighten me; I ended up doing a search for the series and then viewing the episodes from there.

Please improve the user experience when you update, instead of just making a new UI.

Agreed this is a terrible UI; the old one I could just browse anime by genre when I felt like watching something from a specific genre but not sure what anime I wanted to watch, now you just get limited options.

I couldn't find one ... for me, regressing the episode list that used to be available in the Roku queue is the main loss of UI capability in the upgrade.

Instead of searching, I used browse, but I was watching Cardcaptor Sakura ... imagine using browse to get Wizard Barristers. Hit fast forward 19 times to get to the "W"s, then right 10 times to get to the series. 19 button presses plus three or four to get to that point ... to get to something that used to be three or four in the old Roku channel.

As far as the controls being non-intuitive, I'm less worried about, but the controls being efficient when you get used to them is real important, and this is far from efficient. Its less efficient than the UI that it replaces, so it swaps one complaint ("no HD") for another complaint ("the UI sucks").

I'm here to repeat what others are saying, that the new UI is worse than the previous UI.

When viewing the queue, the only option available for each series in the queue is "play the currently shown episode". There is no way to go and play a different episode, or even to choose to play from the beginning of the episode instead of where you left off previously. And no option to remove the series from the queue when you are done. The previous UI made these options easy, without them getting in your way. I don't like losing options during a UI upgrade.

I also have a very odd interaction that's never been a problem before, with my Logitech Harmony remote. I use this for controlling my Roku, but ever since this UI upgrade, when I press one of the arrow buttons to move left/right through the lists, the list always jumps TWO items in that direction, instead of only one. I don't know why this is, but the CrunchyRoll channel is the ONLY Roku channel that displays this problem. I don't see it with any other channels on my Roku, so I find it hard to blame either Roku or Logitech for this one.

It is curious that I can't reproduce the problem using the Roku remote, but that might be because the Roku 3 remote is not Infra-Red, but uses RF instead.

I also agree with the others that, despite the previous UI looking "dated", it definitely was much more browseable, and made content a lot easier to find. You should consider strongly what UI elements you've thrown away, and consider finding a way to return those elements to the new channel interface.

Dear Crunchyroll,

This update is a mess. The visual is good, but functionality is horrid , so what was the point?! All I wanted you to fix was the obnoxious 5-7 minute hang time. Well way to go, but you wrecked everything else in the mean time. Why is fast forwarding and rewinding so awful? The old way worked. Why did you mess up the que? It no longer updates to the next episode automatically. The rotation thing is nauseating. Why is picking a episode so bloody difficult? what is the point in just going to the beginning and end of my que? I have a epic amount of shows in it and that's bloody useless. Not everyone has the roku three. It has more buttons. I don't have some of the stupid buttons on my older roku remote.

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING????? Did you even TEST THIS??

I've been with you as a paying premium member nearly FOUR YEARS. Who were you thinking of when you did this update? Who gives a rip about frickin HD when the interface is so god awful that you can't watch anything? I bought my roku to watch crunchyroll, not the other way around!

Fix it. Quickly. Please. Seriously. Or let's go back to the old one and you can just fix the dratted hang time like I've been asking you too. Because this is just silly and it really shakes my faith in the service. Which I would like to point out, when I stared paying, the computer was the ONLY choice. I can go back to that. It means going back to the days where crunchyroll isn't authorized to pay for itself on my card without question. I like not having commercials. Let's not do this to each other. I don't want us to breakup over this silly mistake.
