But many of us seem to have gotten a little too excited for anything to do with PSSM returning to the states without thinking for a moment. This big news is NOT about the anime at all. This is about the very first manga that was released by a woman who changed the magical-girl genre of manga and anime forever. And that will eventually happen only if Codename: Sailor V does well in sales. And as I said, I support this move. We've never seen or read this before (well most of us..), and this is a good start into the series itself. And then they'll release the rest of the manga series from there.

Tiny little nitpick: they're releasing the Sailor V manga alongside the Sailor Moon manga, not prior to. The first two volumes of each come out this September and the second come out in December.

But otherwise, I completely agree with what you've said. They should absolutely do the best translation possible, and if the series does well, it will be a kind of heads up for the anime licensing companies that Sailor Moon will indeed still sell well, which could lead to a re-licensing of the anime.

They are definitely doing a completely new translation for this version though! In particular, Kodansha USA calls our lovable heroine Usagi in their press release and on the RightStuf page for the first volume of Sailor V, Sailor V/enus's name is listed as Minako Aino, so they're definitely at least leaving the names they way they should be. I'm guessing they'll be leaving the sexual orientations alone as well. If I remember correctly, the Tokyopop version of the manga didn't really do much to change that in any major way, ie maybe they didn't make things as explicit as in the Japanese version, but they also didn't particularly change their orientation (though I don't have my copies here with me at the moment and could be completely wrong).

Tokyopop didn't mess with their orientation. You're right on that.

As for anime licensing - the reason that 's such a quagmire is also because of costs. A lot of companies don't want to pay top dollar for Sailormoon, and that's what Toei wants. Negotiations are still in the toilet.

Now if we can only convince Takeuchi to create some new manga for an anime series we'd be set!

I've known this for awhile now and I kinda want to buy the volume when it comes out. Anything is better than that one volume I have.... the tokyopop, flipped (left to right), pages-easily-falling-out....so I'm glad. Reviving a manga is nice and the art is wonderful so

everyone pretty much knows that the anime will sell and is still popular which why Toei wants so much for relicensing the anime and why no one wants to pay the price yet to relicense the anime although that would be nice if a company could making sure to complete the entire series. although perhaps with the reissue of the manga with better then projected sales a company might be more willing to pay that huge price tag

F.I.N.A.L.L.Y after all these years. And to those afraid of "Americanization like the original release" it's not going to happen. They're retaining all the original names and not flipping the manga.
