All this conversation about what 4kids did or didn't do. Take a look at this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_4Kids_licenses_and_productions

They didn't do crap! Not only was the stuff they brought over mediocre at best, but they hardly produced anything. Out of what they did produce, hardly any of it was even anime.

Who cares? Now, I'm still a little broken up about ADV breaking up...

*EDIT* oh, and all this "at least they introduced kids to anime" is a bunch o' hooey. There are great shows to play rather than more Yu-Gi-Oh clones, and like I said, most of it can't even be construed as anime.

i am going to play devils advocate here and say one thing for 4kids they did a decent dub on yu-gi-oh I actually liked the va's even though there where "lol i am holding a gun missing scenes" 4kids did do there job and get mainstream kids interested in anime and if not for that there wouldn't be teens and young adults watching anime now. I know that sounds stupid but look at the vast majority of ages of people on here they are around 16-30 so many grew up in the 90's and saw anime in it's prime on t.v. but this aside This is it for them, I don't see a crippling company making any sort of a come back after this if not at all. I just hope funimaiton doesn't get affects because I want my damn railgun/index blurays already >_>

Though I didn't quite approve of the 4kids dubbing job, I do agree that they did do their job of getting anime to the younger generations. Companies like 4kids (can't remember the exact company) did the original dub on shows like Sailor Moon, which was probably my first anime at around age 10, maybe even younger. And because of their job of trying to make the show relatable to an American audience, as a child I was able to enjoy it. Now that I'm older, I feel that they should stop cutting out and censoring the shows so I can actually enjoy Yu-Gi-Oh for the show it's supposed to be, but as a parent myself, I'm somewhat grateful that there is that little bit of censorship left. So, I'm torn, but leaning more towards the "stop censoring my anime!" The least 4Kids could have done was provide the original Japanese with subtitles, or an uncut version like what Bandai (I think?) did with Gundam Wing.

Don't forget that they try to convince that United States is the only country in the world, THUS taking out EVERY small bit of Japanese culture.

i hate to defend 4kids on this level I REALLY DO but that happens in any show from the country of origin Japan is no less guilty of this than anyone esle. Look at our cartoons, so much the new ones the older ones, our movies, action games etc. Everything takes place in America with a destroyed Washington dc in the new action flicks, or the whole world is ending but only shows America etc. They tried to make it relatieable on some levels. Name one anime doesn't show an amercian or foreigners from Britain, Germany etc that have blond hair and blue eyes. Phew I am done on it all this needless nit picking aside I love the irony in the thing because i remember their demand back in 07 or 08 to take a down a piracy advocacy fan add using one piece.

Because the author feels it should take place in Amercia, it's fine to show only one culture if the project is made in THAT same country of origion and isn't placed just to edited out another completely(unless for censorship reasons or anything that's banned from the country of origin) ,& it also depends on the setting of the story. The point is, 4kids shouldn't be taking out every bit of Japanese culture out of anime, it's where it's made, that's like kidnapping a German kid and forcing him to speak the same accent, language and have the same skin color as you, convincing him that his mommy is an American then passing him an off as an American, what's wrong with showing forgein culture in forgein cartoons? Oh and Code Geass.

nothing is wrong with it per say but you have to also think of kids minds do they really care about another culture or willingly to learn or do they want something to relate to? That's the only plausible reason I can think of, i knew growing up ccs, sailor moon, dbz, pokemon, yugioh where heavily edited for tv here "fcc standards after all" but it's all we had at the time. 4kids did it's job okay but like the other person that quoted me they could have went about a better way of doing it but you have to remember our culture/moral ethics ..."dear god shoot me now" and our country people still see video games and child's toys and all animation is meant for kids that is changing slowly but in the 90's i don't think anyone wanted to push it at the time. All of this aside 4kids of all people really surprise me on this but what can you do? I do however think this is good chance for funi or viz or even bandai to pick up the license for a re-release "for at lest the original series". Okay enough ranting i am done posting in mah thread i will leave it to others to debate and well lelouch was suppose to be Japanese but i give you that one.

For the Sailor Moon dub, you're thinking of Dic Entertainment. And Sailor Moon was my first Anime too.

you really don't think i don't care that adv is gone? i was just pointing out the irony because 4kids was wanting to take down piracy of it's "license holds" and this is just a shot in the mouth. Hell 90 percent of my anime dvd's are ADV full box sets, I miss new type usa as well but shit I find this ironic and funny in a way because of the executives are a bunch of hypocritical pricks.

They got what's coming for them, they're just a bunch of lying hypocrites who insulted the intelligence of our economy. Good riddence to them.

I'm not even sure how to answer this one, but remember their name is 4Kids Entertainment their target audience is kids who have their parents buy all the games and toys that 4Kids have their label on. kids can entertain themselves for hours with bubble wrap a straw and a cardboard box, so making the shows they dub intellectual is basically pointless.

I believe you misunderstood me. I didn't mean any slight upon your ADV fandom. I just added that sentence about ADV as a tangential remark referring to the old story of a substantial company falling apart. It was to serve as an underscore for just how crummy 4Kids is, and what little they did for the anime industry.

---------------

I'm all for getting a younger generation interested, but not with material so bad that it removes any sort of respect to be gained. I mean the kid will lose interest and "grow out of it" and adults will still label all anime as inane kid shows. Even though I think the anime censorship sucks, starting a kid with the censored Sailor Moon works because the jump from that to a more substantial series is not too far, and the series stays relative to them. However, going from Ben 10, Tai Chi Chasers, or whatever computer animated Yu-Gi-Oh clone show to Cowboy Bebop, for example, is a bit more of a leap (all of this is over time mind you). Somewhere in between the American cartoon slop with anime stylings is served up to little kids the transition is not made. Of course, I know not everyone is going to like anime. However, I'm talking about a change in public attitude towards anime. It's not all hentai. It's not just for kids. It's also not something you have to obsess over like us [/i ]weirdos. It's just another conduit for storytelling. Pick your story, and dig it even if the mouths move funny and rarely show teeth (my dad's favorite thing to pick on about it).

They did a good job on Ultimate Muscle,& Pokemon. They handled Yu-Gi-Oh alright, but everything else is god-awful,& don't get me started with One Piece...let's just say it's THE WORST DUB OF ALL-TIME!!!!

A few weeks ago I thought it would be awesome if 4Kids lost the rights to Yu Gi Oh. But I also thought nah its never gonna happen. A couple of weeks latter and BAM this happens.

well that is partly true kids don't read as much as they should, but to the point does the whole company need to be punished, no just the people who were involved. does the person who, lets say delivers the mail or cleans the toilets need to loose their jobs, not they don't. those that were knowingly involve should get whats coming to them not those that had nothing to do with it.
