I have to go with a few classic greats. That I bet no one in this thread even took the time to check out.. Yet there masterpieces in their own rights.

Madbull34. This is a anime about a few cops from New York.. lot of action, violence, and death.

also in the classic category was an anime that in japan was 3 times more popular in Japan than ranma1/2 yet never was given a chance out side of Japan. The anime in the old days that beat out Ranma1/2 in Japan was named " Yawara."

Ruin Explorers and Rune Soldiers are two good anime that are underrated as well.

I find most titles by Masaaki Yuasa (Kaiba / Tatami Galaxy) to be very underrated. Kaiba's ending was somewhat dissatisfying, but the overall premise was excellent. Tatami Galaxy's very difficult to watch and needs an acquired taste, but the ending was just amazing.

So we had one for the most overrated how about Underrated? The anime you think is brilliant but isn't popular.

My votes go to:

1. Serial Experiments:Lain - Probably one of the most underrated anime of all time. Has a cult following but never achieved any major success and really should have. Has great music and animation and a deep story that really makes you think.

2. Gantz - Great story and action. The manga is better but the anime was still very good and should be a part of more peoples collection.

3. Noein - This was one of those ones i saw on the shelf and passed on then later found it on offer on Amazon and bought the boxed set and was glad i did. It's really very good but doesn't have a lot of fans.

I take your submissions and I raise you one Texhnolyze ( FYI: character design by Yoshitoshi ABe, the same artist who did Serial Experiments Lain). I really have no idea if Texhnolyze is well known or not but considering that the supply has run dry and with no real plans of a re-release I assume that there is no demand for it to begin with. This deficiency of demand is probably due to a lack of awareness because, as far as I can see, Texhnolyze is an amazing anime. Keep in mind that it's a slower paced anime, and like Lain, is more based on atmosphere.

Honorable mentions:

Key the Metal Idol
Perfect Blue

One should keep in mind the difference between an overlooked anime series which received a reasonable release and just an good obscure one. Therein might lie the key to making this debate more fruitful.

I love Texhnolyze it's another great show. I was switched on to it through Yoshitoshi Abe basically and i wasn't dissapointed with it. Features the same wonderful character design style as Lain with just as much of the haunting storyline.

Perfect Blue brings back some memories for me i used to watch that movie a lot and i can probably still sing all the lyrics to Ai No Tenshi lol

This is more of a list of underrated shows in my opinion of course than a de-facto "single most underrated"

Key the Metal Idol,
Texhnolyze,
Haibane Renmei,
Kaiba,
NieA_7,
Arjuna,
Dennou Coil,
Now and Then Here and There,
Boogiepop Phantom,
Please Save My Earth,
Crest of Stars/Banner of the Stars,
Infinite Ryvius
AD Police Files (the OVAs)

May be worth mentioning:

Toward the Terra
Futatsu no Spica
Flag
Tweeny Witches (Mahou Shoujo Tai Arisu)
Megazone 23
Gunbuster (original and the newer version)
Dirty Pair (original series)
12 Kingdoms (anime is good the novels are superior, they're being published in english now)
Saiunkoku Monogatari
Zegapain (this turned out to be something i wasn't expecting)
Last Exile (all be it this did get a lot of exposure)
Wolfs Rain,

Most anime i prefer watching are very very underrated

Most all anime that have depth to them are underrated. Wolf's Rain, Arjuna, Le Chevalier D'Eon, Air Gear, there are many more like that.

Air Gear is just soooo.... underrated. It's an anime of it's own kind, that's why, i comfort myself. But it does have a cult following.
It works like that. Air Gear's one of the few anime whose fans are legit die-hard.

Usually all anime that have slightly serious themes are the ones people tend to take for granted. Only if it's a serious anime with a harem theme or something like it, will people actually watch it. which, let's face it, is basically pointless.

Cyborg 009. It was the first manga that really emphasized the super hero fighting force trope. The 2001 anime I find is criminally underrated. However, I advocate watching the dub because I find the English voices were more in line with the manga. Takahiro Sakurai's rendition of 009 in the 2001 version has already been expressed by mean as being epic failure, to put nicely.

another one was A Cheeky Angel... ..
