I absolutely love the Special A Manga, but I am thoroughly disappointed in the animated series due to the fact the characters look different.

Anime version make the characters more slender, stick figured, and less athletic. The main characters were emphasized as wrestling and defensive hand to hand combat specialist. Would that not need some visual calf muscles not shapeless columns drawn in the anime. The anime does not make the male character as alluring as the manga version did. The male character in the manga had a more dirty blonde hair that had strands of one to three hair pieces sticking up (suggesting sometimes a devilish appearance). But my biggest pet peeve were the eyes. The eyes were drawn especially well in the manga. The eyes were drawn to look lazy but the color suggested more of an aware, alertness to them . The color contrast between the hair and eye color created the pull to stare at the eyes. The anime version has light brown eyes and light to medium brown hair. These two color options create more of a softer personality. The anime character also seems to come across as more driven to be better and excel thus, appearing to put forth more effort in winning. The manga character was more of a genius / natural talent, an introvert, but always seemed like he was constantly gathering information. The manga character also was depicted as having almost super hero abilities thus needing any effort in being NUMBER !.

well yeah that might be true (well I haven't read the manga yet except for the last chapter) but we all know that most of the manga is way better than anime. though I didn't read ur whole post coz I'z lazy but I guess it's just like when I watched Kaichou wa maid sama. I really loved the manga and the manga has great artwork. then I heard that there would be an anime so I watched it, but I didn't really expect it to have not-so-good art. so I dropped it at episode 1 :|

In other words, the characters were 2 metres tall and 30 cm wide. Still even with the, rather unusual physique (Hell, it made Code Geass and CLAMP pale in comparison), the anime was a decent romantic comedy. Nothing ground-breaking, but it didn't get much wrong either.
