The special was put in as episode one.. but the real ep. 1 comes out this upcoming sunday. which will be called episode 2

It's as jtiskool said, that they put episode 1 as a crossover special.
The real episode 1 comes next Sunday, which CR should have by then.

Read manga. Facepalmed at artwork. Read more manga. Saw a certain character named 'Tommy'. Facekeyboarded at artwork. VERY RELUCTANTLY, read even more manga. Saw the faces of the characters after drinking the soup. Facetabled at artwork. Now in serious condition at Intensive Care.
If the anime is like the manga in terms of character development, story and most importantly ART, then it's a big no from me.

I'm sure you saw the OVA which came out on Oct. 2009.. Try a different site to find the first episode, but its really not the first episode just a crossover special that should have 45 minutes of runtime.. The real 1st episode comes out this sunday.

But CR never licensed toriko so it wont be on CR. Its not on their lineup

You wanted character development and story in 20 pages? Are you serious? And why do you care if a character is called Tommy? Is it not Japanese enough for you?
And there's nothing wrong with the artwork - it was heavily inspired by One Piece.
