That's said about 2012 being the end of the world may be true with the way things are going with the world...

Because of an area which is known to have frequent earthquakes, and had suffered an 8.9 just under a month ago, this being described as an aftershock must be related to 2012!

Yes, this is bad, but its sort of expected

I feel bad for Japan but there isn't much a person can do besides be there when it happens and help in a physical, productive manner. Since I can't be there physically it looks like I'll need to donate more money. at the very least I have my SSI this month.

did the earthquake do anything? Earthquakes are not really a problem for japan they are prepared for them. They were not prepared for a tsunami coming over the wall they built to stop a 25 foot tsunami.

I Really do hope that this will not do as huge damages as the previous earthquake and tsunami did.

The news article over at yahoo said there wasn't any apparent damage so hopefully this is just a mild case of aftershock

The scale is exponential...

let's see if I can explain. 10 is a (base 10) order of magnitude greater than 1, and 100 (also known as 10 to the power of 2) is an order of magnitude greater than 10.

so comparing the two earthquakes is not like comparing 7.4 to 8.9 it's like comparing 4 000 000 to 90 000 0000

While disheartening and anxiety causing I'm sure. It's nowhere NEAR as dangerous as the one from 20 or so days ago.

I feel much sadness for Japan but have hope that they will come together and rebuild and get the help they need. My condolences to those families who have dead or missing loved ones, friends, and acquaintances.

well it seems like it was just an aftershock which is too be expected, in any case nothing seems to suggest that this one was as bad as the one that just hit them a few weeks ago.

If you've ever been through a major earthquake, or at least really followed whats going on in that region after one, you would know that subsequent quakes in an area can be considered aftershocks for years after the main quake as the area settles back down. I read that on the San Andreas fault in California a quake can be considered an aftershock of the main quake for up to years later until the fault settles back down to a normal activity level.

Japan will most likely get hit by many strong quakes for some time to come given the magnitude of the main quake, nothing as powerful as it was originally hit with, and the post about the scale is accurate I believe and a 7.4 is nothing compared to a 9.0 or 8.9 or whatever the final magnitude was.

The interesting thing is it shows how much Japan is ready for a quake of this particular magnitude, which a 7.4 is pretty strong, I was in a 6.7 I think in Northridge, CA and that was crazy to me... a 7.4 is even stronger than that and they just, pardon the pun, shake it off... I can't even imagine what that almost 9 must have been like.

The first place I checked was the CNN main page... had there been any big disaster they would have posted it there since it would have been more newsworthy than the budget crisis in the US... but since there were no deaths or destruction there was just a little link somewhere with a half a page written. It's how I figured all were safe this time, and how the reactors were okay... if the news pulls it as it's main article then no one is in immediate danger or dying... "reactors are doing well 3 weeks later" is not as good newsworthy as "nuclear meltdown imminent" I guess...
