If you are looking for some good shows to watch you can look up the top 100 anime list on Animenewsnetwork.com . To get to this, first go to the website, look for the "encyclopedia" green colored tab to the (midway-top) right hand side, hover over it and click on the link saying "(top 10)" next to "anime". From there you can expand to the top 50 by clicking on the "top 50 link" at the top of the list (use the bayesian estimate top 10 list at the very top btw) and from there you can look at even more by going to the bottom of the page in clicking on top 100, 200, etc.

Iv watched about 40 of the top 50 on this list and let me tell you, the ratings for this site are legit. Not only will it show the top rated shows but if you were to click on one of the shows that looks/sounds interesting, it would direct you to more information then you could probably handle. This includes the number of episodes, release dates of the episodes (as soon as they are announced which is usually about 2-3 weeks in advance), very detailed descriptions of the genre type and a short introduction to the show. Also you can start getting an idea of some Directors that you enjoy so you can look forward to their future productions (R.I.P. Satoshi Kon Q.Q)

I honestly don't think I would enjoy anime as much as I do now if it wern't for this sites amazing community that rates the shows very strictly and accurately (so remember, just because you "liked" the show doesn't mean you give it a "masterpiece" rating like how you give every show 5 stars on crunchyroll!!!!)

Happy hunting!

http://myanimelist.net/topanime.php

The top anime in the site are rated by ten thousands of fans, so, yeah. I can pretty much trust the site.

Seeing 5000 people giving a 10/10 on a series over a single (or just recently 2) episode (Gintama continuation) makes me highly distrust these ratings. I didn't rate Naruto Shippuden until after the first arc was over (which was about 40ish episodes in) to base any criticism over a long running series, regardless of the fact that its a continuation, its still a milestone in notification that changes will be made. Gintama hasn't aired for a while now probably do to low viewer ratings, so this come back is probably with intentions of doing much better before, but just because you liked Gintama when it aired before does not guarantee it will be as high of quality now. In other words, you shouldn't give the continuation series a rating until you have actually watched a fair amount of episodes.

While a lot of these shows are worthy of the top 50 spot, most of them don't deserve as high of a rank as they have. I assume the ratings on the site I look at are "educated" rather then out of pure fandom, even though there are far less votes. Take crunchyrolls rating system for example. Do you really think that nearly every show is deserving of 4.5+ stars? No they arn't should be you answer because quite frankly there are some shows that are complete trash and yet have a 4.5+ rating with thousands of votes. I really wish people didn't give shows 5/5 stars just because they "enjoyed" the show and instead gave it an honest rating.

The reason I think that Animenewsnetwork has such accurate ratings is because you don't rate with a 1 out of 10 or 1 out 5 system, but rather you rate it purely by description. The best rating possible is called "Masterpiece", second is "Excellent", third is "Very Good", fourth is "Good", fifth is "Decent", sixth is "so-so", seventh is "not really good", eighth is "weak", ninth is "bad", tenth is "awful", and eleventh is "worst ever". From these descriptions you will be able to directly correlate what you thought about the series with these phrases and make a much more educated rating.

I can honestly say that I've never tried searching for good shows based on ratings. Believe it or not I usually decide what new show to watch, by seeing an AMV of it on animemusicvideos.org. I'll be like, "Wow, what the hell is that show!?" Then I'll search it out, and viola!

Like I'm saying, some anime on that list don't deserve the spot. But I have been using that list since I started watching anime and not even once was I disappointed. Now, in myanimelist.net, you wouldn't find anything rated lower than a 6 (well not that i know of), but that's possibly the LOWEST you can see in there. While the highest is not probably exceeding a 9.

6 - bad
7 - good
8 - very good
9 - excellent

That's how I see it. Although it's pretty much obvious what those scores mean for the people who rate them. MAL also has a review section, recommendation section and a forum which are very useful if you're looking for an anime to watch. They also offer you to make your own list so when you come across another user and somewhat your lists match, you can just browse that user's list and find some anime suited to your taste. IDK, I just find it useful.

Now, Gintama's case. I agree that it shouldn't be rated a 10 after JUST TWO FREAKIN EPISODES. But you know what, I couldn't blame the fans for rating it so quickly. I watched the new season and it just blew me away. It's so good that you won't even be able to stop yourself from giving it a 10. I AM NOT SAYING IT'S SMART TO DO SO, but come on, have you seen the new season? ALTHOUGH, I saw in threads that IFEVER Gintama is losing it radiance and becoming boring, they would change the score and give it a lower one.

I want you to know that I'm not against anime news network or anything, I just think MAL is better that's all.

Wow thanks, you reminded me to watch a ton of shows that I put off and completely forgot about like Kure-nai. Also the 8.0 magnitude looks amazing to watch after all that has happened recently in Japan.

Heres my list if you wana take a look at it.

I usually forget to update this list unless the show was really good, but at least you can see the shows I enjoyed the most

You have a very good point in how you use the lists of other people with similar interests. As I mentioned just now about Cecilthedarkknight's list, there are a lot of underrated or unknown shows that are simply amazing and yet so few people know about them.

Also Id agree with how you havn't been unsatisfied with that list because a large majority of those shows I too have watched and greatly enjoyed so generally I guess it really doesn't even matter what the highest rated shows are so long as complete trash isn't in the top 50 (which there isn't on that list so no problems there).

I've been meaning to get around to Gintama and started to continue the series after I heard of the new season coming but I have yet to see any of this seasons episodes. Thinking of just doing nothing but watching the rest of the series in one sitting which makes up about 100 episodes to go for me (yes, sadly I have actually accomplished this before. watching 200 Naruto fillers in a row when I was young and oblivious, thinking that I was actually learning parts of the actual story line, despite hating every second of it. Wanted to commit suicide a week later after finding out that I had wasted about 3 days of life on these so called "fillers")

Ya I kept on putting off dennou coil but since you suggested it I just added it to my torrent list. I highly reccommend you watch "Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo". Most unique use of art I have ever seen in an anime. Its based off a great literature with modifications for it to me more futuristic, modern, and historic like all at the same time.
