Long distance relationships can work. You have to have a few things near-perfect: communication, trust, honesty, and openness. On top of that, a little positive attitude / optimism goes a long way. You can make it work if you truly care for one another and are determined.

Online relationships? I do not know. I have always thought that it is not a true relationship until you have met in real life, but perhaps that is too harsh a judgement. But as for cultivating it online before meeting, there is nothing wrong with that.

unless it's something temporary, or you eventually plan on meeting chances are 100 to 1 that it won't work out, eventually you get tired of just sending messages or phone calls and you just want someone physically in front of you

Oh it definitely works! Then two days later you're overwhelmed with loneliness and dark thoughts of your gf boning some other asshole behind your back. So you go home with some random bar skank and ruin your whole relationship. hehe.

I think it's possible, but not for most people. It takes a lot of trust, and you aren't able to see or touch the person, for the most part, and most people aren't willing to do that.

This right here basically says all I need to. If I've managed to for the past three years, than I'm proof it can work. It is hard, it is frustrating, and it is a challenge, but if you find someone who you think is worth it, and they feel the same, and the two of you are able to get through that, then I don't see why you shouldn't put your all into helping it succeed.
