Say what you want about the company, they were pioneers in popularizing manga (older Viz titles also contributed). While I haven't bought a TokyoPop manga volume in years, I hope the titles they still have licensed get both rescued by other companies and remain online. That is, I hope their present catalog can make money online.

Note: This is merely the North American publishing division that is closing. There's a chance the North American division could still exist in making money from the manga being put online to read.

Fair enough, but one shouldn't deny they did such a contribution to North American's rising popularity of manga.

There were signs they were in trouble. Still, it hurts to see Tokyopop go. Yeah, they made some really dumb decisions (anyone hear about "America's Greatest Otaku" or whatever it was called, some series didn't have the best translations ever, like "Initial D," and for whatever reason they refused to translate SFX on most titles), but you have to admit that they revolutionized the manga industry. They started releasing manga unflipped at about $10 a volume when no one else would have dared to do so. Some titles will definitely be picked up by other companies like "Hetalia." (With Hetalia's popularity, I would be shocked if it wasn't picked up by somebody). Others, well...we probably will never see finished like "Aria," their novel line ("Gothic," "Chibi Vampire" [it only had ONE VOLUME LEFT! *D'arrrrg!*], "Trinity Blood," and "Full Metal Panic!"), "Dazzle," "Saiyuki," "Loveless," "Tactics...." As much as I wish that everything Tokyopop will leave unfinished will be picked up by some other company, I don't see it happening. I hope everyone laid off is able to find work again quickly. If there's any Tokyopop titles that you were thinking about getting, I would advise you to get them sooner rather than later because some titles may never be picked up again and the used market can be brutal with out-of-print titles. If anyone's interested, here's a list of titles Tokyopop had: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=11. Keep in mind, some titles were dropped and were never completely released years ago, before the news of Tokyopop's closure hit.

It's sad, but considering how sales for manga keep falling every year, it comes as to no surprise.

I really don't think you have to worry about Hetalia. Somebody will license rescue the title. Considering how well it's been doing on the New York Times Bestseller List, it would be really dumb if somebody else didn't pick up the title. We don't know who will get it or when Hetalia will be rescued at this time, but give it a few months or so. We may have to wait for Tokyopop's license to lapse, but I'm sure at least 1 company is trying to get the title. Now, if you were talking about something like Aria--then you'd probably be out of luck, sad to say. Pretty much anything incomplete that was a New York Times Bestseller will probably be rescued at some point because those titles make money.

I pray that another company licenses 'Gakuen Alice' - this was at the moment the only manga I was collecting from Tokyopops and the plot was getting better & better

Yeah some anons already said so, I'm good now. I still have the anime, webcomic, and blog, so it's not like I depend on the manga anyways.

Terrible. Most of my manga is TP, and I've been reading their Twelve Kingdoms novels :/

Why, Tokyopop, did you spend your money so recklessly? Now I can't read Twelve Kingdoms 5 and all the other titles I've been looking for.

I forgot to comment on this. It'll take at least a decade to save everything, and I doubt most of the stuff will get saved. I highly doubt ALL of this will be saved. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=11
