As the title says, this is a feedback thread on the font's used for Spring 2011 simulcasts where I'll be giving my personal opinion on the font used for every Spring title. It would be helpful if others posted their opinions on these font's in this thread too.

I've grouped certain animes together as they have pretty much the same font. Screenshots will be contained in spoilers.

-----------

Animes: Beelzebub, Cardfight!! Vanguard, Fairy Tail, Gosick, Sket Dance
Screenshots
(5 Images):
Comment: Looks great, and are by far the best use of fonts on CR. The colors match well and are a nice change from plain black borders.
Grade: A+

-----------

Animes: Battle Girls - Time Paradox, Deadman Wonderland, My Ordinary Life, Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas, Steins;Gate, The World God Only Knows II
Screenshots (6 Images):
Comment: Looks nice in a small window, but the subtitles look slightly too bag (mostly tall) in fullscreen. Also, the font doesn't really blend well with Nichijou's backgrounds.
Grade: C+

-----------

Animes: Hanasaku Iroha, Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa nai, Sakaiichi Hatsukoi
Screenshots (3 images):
Comment: The subtitles are smaller than the font's used on other CR series, but I believe they still look quite good in fullscreen, especially for Hanasaku Iroha. While I like them, I can see how some users may dislike them, so I wouldn't complain if they were changed.
Grade: B
Update: Subs are now larger, but still look good. A- (note: latest episodes are still small).

-----------

Anime: Bleach
Screenshot:
Comment: A simple, but effective bold font. No complaints from me, as it looks pretty good.
Grade: A-

-----------

Anime: Naruto Shippuuden
Screenshot:
Comment: I've always thought it has been slightly too thin, and needs a thicker outline. That being said, it does look slightly better in fullscreen and I have grown accustomed to this font.
Grade: C

-----------

Anime: Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi
Screenshot:
Comment: It's similar to a better sized version of the font used for Deadman Wonderland etc. However, it still doesn't blend too well.
Grade: B
Update: Subs are now massive. D.

-----------

Anime: Tono to Issho S2
Screenshot:
Comment: It has a nice outline, but the font size is obviously too large.
Grade: C+
Update: Subs are now a perfect size. A.

-----------

Anime: Mainichi Kaasan
Screenshot:
Comment: Too big a gap at the bottom of the screen, and font is also too large.
Grade: D+

-----------

Anime: Astarotte's Toy (now changed)
Screenshot:
Comment: Hopefully this font is just a mistake and gets fixed soon. I'm sure I don't have to point out what's wrong with it...
Grade: F
Update: Much better with the orange outline, still some problems as listed below. C-.

-----------

Anime: Gintama Season 5 (now changed)
Screenshot:
Comment: Pretty much the same as the Bleach font, with yellow subs instead of white. Personally, I detest yellow subs.
Grade: F (if white, A-).
Update: Now white, with a nice outline too. Could be a little closer to the bottom of the screen. B+.

-----------

This thread is intended only for feedback. I'm actually fine with the font's for everything except my 2 F's, but hopefully this thread will help with the choice of fonts in the future.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into this to see if we can have the font styles changed for some.

Yellow subs aren't so bad after watching a couple of anime dvd with it I've grown used to it and have no problems with it (having to large a gap between the bottom and the subs is much more annoying to me now) although at first it did annoy me since i was so used to white subs but now there the same to me. Astarotte's Toy has some bad quality subs with ugly aliasing all around the borders like anime dvd subtitles which are low res(Thank god for cyberlink PowerDVD 10 TrueTheatherHD smoothing out the subs on those) But at the distance i watch my 32" t.v from my bed i don't really notice it but up close its defiantly noticeable and should defiantly be fixed.

Made changes to Tono to Issho, Astarotte's Toy and Gintama. Going to work on the rest when I have time. Will also try to have the translators provide the subtitles with styles better suited for our player.

Yeah, I noticed the changes. Both the Gintama and Tono to Issho subs looks great now, while Astarotte's Toy is much better. Thanks for the changes.

I'm going to be nitpicking here, but I did notice 2 things with these upgrades:

1) Gintama - the new border for 202 and 203 is slightly thicker than the one for 204, both look great though (I believe 202/203 looks better in full screen, while 204 is better in the normal window). I'm sure most people wouldn't even care about this difference, but I thought I'd point it out anyway.

2) Astarotte's Toy - The curves on the inside of the borders seem to be quite rough (only noticeable up fairly close), especially compared to the smoothness other colored borders have.

@djheadshot My hate for yellow subs actually come from how bad the subs on TAN's simulcast look on a computer screen. Admittedly, the yellow subs for Gintama were nowhere near as bad as those, but still enough to be a nuisance. As I said in a comment on Gintama ep 202, not everyone hates yellow subs as much as I do, but I still believe most people would still prefer white subs (or be indifferent between them).

I noticed that with Astarotte's Toy but I wanted to preserve the font type and colors that the translator chose. So I just fixed the errors that were made with the font size and outline. I think the problem is that we don't provide anti-aliasing for this font type. I'll have to see if that can be fixed.

Thanks for fixing up the font for Astarotte's still not the best, but a million times better than what It was.

also off topic but since you have your eyes in this thread BasouKazuma do you think you could look into Gosick episode 13? The audio is absolutely terrible, seems like an encode error.

We were given a bad source video for Gosick 13. We're going to need a new source video before we can fix it, so this could take some time.

Edit: I fixed the audio without getting a new source video. So it should play fine now.

While huge subtitles are overkill and take up to much space, making them microscopic isn't much better like in My Ordinary Life episode 4.

Also, not translating dialog and just putting in a "?" instead isn't any help.

Thanks for fixing the audio. Now could you fix the super small subtitles on My Ordinary life ep4 and Deadmans Wonderland ep2?

The subs on Nichijou ep4 and Deadmand Wonderland ep 2 are no different than the subs for Hanasaku Iroha and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi had (some have been changed). It's rather interesting to see the change, as I thought small subs would be quite controversial especially for people using different devices (even though I liked them and thought it was a massive improvement for Nichijou).

Honestly, I was expecting the small sub sizes to get changed before the large ones...

umm, you might wanna take a closer look. The subs for Nichijou and Deadman are A LOT smaller than the ones used for Hanasaku an Sekaiichi. They're also at the very bottom of the screen, making them cut in half while trying to view them on an HDTV via hdmi from a computer.

The subs for Nichijou and Deadman look exactly like how the others used to (I note that they have now been changed though). I understand that they may look bad on other devices, but they look quite nice on a computer screen.

These small subs are a bug. This happened with Nichijou EP3. they're not normal. These are the subtitle fonts used for android/handheld devices.
