This anime might actually be good if they stuck close to the plot instead of having so many pointless and annoying little side stories.

It started off really good, but it just went downhill after episode 2.

I don't understand how something like this can get 24 episodes, while Deadman Wonderland gets cut off at 12.

I suppose it's just a sign that most people prefer watching crap.

Side stories often make an anime as it allows for further character development. There has only been 1 or 2 so far, so I'm not entirely sure what it is that you are going off about in that post. It's definitely not crap, even if it isn't in your taste.

Well, it's true that it's only been twice that they made an entire episode that was completely random, but a 24 episode anime should be short enough to not have episodes like that. Those 2 would be the chef demon one and the sea demon one. Even in episode 12 while Rin is fighting, Shiemi is getting way too much time on screen considering how uninteresting that part of the story is. This kind of thing seems to happen a lot. It feels like the creator had a good idea for a story, but can't come up with good material to be used for all the parts that aren't plot-intensive.

I've been on the fence about whether or not I should continue it. It's not the absolute worst thing I've seen, but it's not going to win any awards. A show like this should only have major fans in the 10-14 age range or so. It's not even like Fairy Tail, which although it is probably aimed at the same target audience, has enough good qualities to make it still interesting to older viewers.

If you can tell me specifically what about this show is so good then I'll be happy to hear you out. I'm done ranting for now.

Actually, I can agree with that, I just wouldn't say that it was a crap anime. The side stories are good, the overall plot is great, but the screen time of certain characters during action scenarios definitely makes it less interesting.
I still will watch the show, because I am interested in the characters/their relationship, and the story.

Really great series, when I first watched it I thought I will get bored within the first couple of episodes but after a while I got hooked. It's a nice change of anime for me to watch from the other series I watch.

I completely agree with you there, after the first 2 episodes I thought I was going to watch some thing as good or maybe better than deadman wonderland but it totally did go downhill. The third episode was only ok, pretty cliche but it was still alright, it set the stage for the rest of the series I guess pretty much. The fourth episode was just bad. Sorry I can't describe them that much hehe it's been a while since I watched those episodes but the fourth one made me stop watching. It was about some garden and involved a curse, it was just so boring and played out that I had ADD in that half hour. I guess I was expecting too much.

This show is a standard action shonen that merely uses religion as its window dressing, but the variation on their powers to mask their unoriginality isn't the problem, and in fact I was actually looking forward to how the presentation might provide a fresh take on the genre. By the end of episode 2, I was actually hoping this show would take itself seriously from here on out, especially given the setting and story behind the show.

But episode three happened, and my expectations were dashed. Honestly, I should have seen the signs. Right off the bat they were trying to invoke sympathy for the MC instead of letting him ingratiate himself to the audience to build up more impact for his backstory, and then the part after that took a complete 180 in tone, completely undermining the series' premise. Not to mention the opening number was a red flag as well, although most of the BGMs were actually pretty nice.

And therein lies the problem with Blue Exorcist: it doesn't take itself seriously at all while the premise would suggest otherwise. This isn't to say a bait-and-switch isn't inherently bad, but I expect to be compensated in other ways, and in this case, it would be the action scenes. But unfortunately, even as eye candy, this show suffers from a bit of stiffness. It looks pretty, to be certain, but I don't imagine the choreography to be improving any time soon.

Overall, after watching three episodes of this show, I'm not entirely convinced, and so I'll have to hang it up. I'll get back to this if it reaches Madoka/Clannad/Code Geass levels of hype, but somehow that probably isn't going to happen.

Wow. So there are others that aren't so crazy about this show. THANK GOD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE! I don't hate it, but it is nothing special. The main character is the son of Satan. I hear that everywhere (like Demon King Daimao and Beelzebub). The action is good, but not great, and to me, they focus on it more than the story, which is better. Action is not the most important element in anime (but most idiots believe that sorry), and sometimes, it's not even needed at all! I do like a few of the characters only, and that's Mephisto, Amaimon, and little bit Rin. The others are very similiar to many other anime (such as Shura, who is VERY similar to Yoko in Gurren Lagann in my opinion), which reminds me.....the show is also very similar, in my opinion, to FullMetal Alchemist and D.Gray Man. The art is good , but only as good as Naruto (which I'm also not a big fan). Most of the music is bland, but a few is just breathtaking, and they go overboard in comedy on many scenes of some episodes. I'm not a hater, but I will say that this anime is overrated. I hope it at least has a good ending at the last episode, because like I said, it's nothing special to me. I will admit it is one of the better anime this year, but it's not close to, what most people, being the best anime this year, which ticks me off slightly because they focus too much on this anime that they usually ignore the other great anime that has also been released this year, such as Steins;Gate, Gosick, Usagi Drop, Beelzebub, The Mystic Archives of Dantalian, Hanasaku Iroha, and Nichijou (My Ordinary Life).

Note: I also am annoyed that many fangirls only watch certain anime because of the "hot main male character" dammit, which is also one of the reasons why this anime has so much hype.

I have no idea why it has so much hype either. I mean it seems so standard but it's still good to watch. The manga is O.K. but it still follows the same formulas. It reminds me of something like D. Gray Man in disguise with the concept of exorcists and Soul Eater a little but I still find this show entertaining.

I can't sum up my feelings too much but the "fairly big issue" that arose at the end ep 15 was solved in 16 by none other than...

Than..

THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP!

oh well I'll say sum it up then - it's a fairly well animated and produced shounen show with (assuming) an original ending - It's been enjoyable but not something I look forward to every week. Original endings tend to break more than they seal so - meh.. It's okay..

It's not the best show out this season but it's far from the worst. It is popular for sure so that at least says something about it. I like the show because of storyline and characters. I wish there was more character development with the supporting cast though. I tend to not like shows that take themselves too seriously or that are serious 99.9% of the time and also shows with convoluted plots that make kids think they're so deep. Most show with 'god-complex' characters, (MSMM anyone? It was very well done but didn't deserve the months of fanboying afterwards that it received here and elsewhere) fit the bill. Basically, if you don't like the generic shounen storyline, you probably won't like Blue Exorcist. A lot of people that keep complaining about these shows plots just want gratuitous violence nonstop for 30 minutes. Violence alone does not make a good story.
