I Have tested several popular anime titles known to be broadcasted in 720p format ex: naruto shippuden, Fairy Tail and selected 720p watched them
and have concluded that no anime or video on crunchyroll is streamed in HD.

Anime in HD 720p is much more clearer and sharper then what you are watching on here now.

Crunchyroll claims they stream anime videos in 720p. They are lieing.

ALL THERE SO CALLED "720P HD" is actually 640x480p upscaled to 1280x720p

This is not HD at all it's only upconversion and upscaling

This is probably a troll but ....

I can confirm for everyone that we receive the content in 720P or higher format for most of our Simulcasts and as such, provide 720P versions. These are compressed so that people with your average internet connection can stream them so they are not as good quality as Bluray but it is 720P and very good quality. If we do not receive a 720P source video, we do not provide a 720P version unless an error was made, which doesn't happen often. There are even shows that we only provide in SD since the source video is lower than 480P since we are very much against up-scaling.

I doubt it i used to watch in 480p before i upgraded my internet to fios and the video quality on a new show like squid girl at the time looked better then the anime dvd's i was watching even with my powerdvd 10 hd up-conversion. 720p looks even sharper and more detailed. doesn't get much better then that would be nice if they offered a 1080p/i option but how many anime if any are broadcast in that resolution? Bottom line is I'm very impressed with the video quality crunchy roll offers even at 480p which i suspect may be running at a higher then dvd resolution but not HD like 1024x768 or something.

Sorry to burst your bubble but practically all video on the internet is compressed. Even those HD channels through your cable or satellite provider are compressed. The best HD feed you can get is actually through your local OTA channels. Crunchyroll might not stream the highest quality feeds but its a far cry from upscaling content.

this!
Well what other place do you know of that claims to stream HD anime? oh wait NONE! The only way to get true full HD is Blu-ray and thats it. The OP is trying to start something is well is obvious and also not factual as well. No one has the bandwith to stream full HD anyways let alone broadcast it on TV.

Also I love how he claims all this stuff but yet has no stats to back it up what so ever at all.

You have me convinced...! It is always best to upscale from 4:3 => 16:9 for that beautiful stretched or cropped effect ...lol

As others have said streaming media has to be compressed. Streaming media in original format found on blu-rays is not even plausable

as a 25 min episode would be around (guessing) 6+ gb in size.....

If that is so why do you release Bleach in 720p when it is not even broadcasted in 720p in Japan its only SD field up which is only 480i

go to this site and you'll see what i mean http://gorry.haun.org/pw/?cmd=read&page=20110101_tvaformat&word=Bleach Its in Japanese but bleach has been high lighted if you use google translate you should be able to understand it

Im not saying that 720p is suppose to be blu ray quality because it's not I don't expect crunchyroll to release anything in blu ray quality because it is nearly impossible since most animes don't broadcast in that quality.

However i'm saying that 720p is supposed to look clearer and sharper than what is being seen now by the claimed 720p that you provide here

I'll upload a sample video and provide a link to show you what i mean it will be a comparison of actual 720p vs your claimed 720p here

Firstly, although its not currently broadcast in 720p that's not to say that the version sent to crunchyroll isn't. Example, all anime is generally produced at a high quality 720p as an example, then when its sent to a broadcasting company they downscale and compress it for broadcast, and then re-broadcast the full hd version at a later date.

Crunchyroll, as an internet based stream, gets the 720p version and can broadcast it in its original state, (or close to)

Generally also, because its internet based, a high degree of compression takes place. I could show you videos of 480 which look far superior to ones of 1080 because of the degree of compression used. That's just the price you pay. But you CAN still see the difference in the HD content compared to 480 or SD, hell, even I can see the difference and i'm legally classified as blind.

Hell it may even be something as simple as your monitor resolution is sucky so you don't even view the 720 propperly as your PC is downscaling it for all we know.

OR another thought is perhaps the new additions to flash are upscaling the SD to 720, who knows? (anyone willing to go look at the flash options and tell me if this is possible)

No point getting your nickers in a twist over it, honestly who really cares. I don't even watch in HD most of the time because of bandwidth limitations, I just support because I like anime and want to see more of it legally.

1. It doesn't matter what resolution the show is broadcasted at in Japan as Crunchyroll does not record the show like fan subbers. They get the episodes directly from the Japanese studios before the show even airs in Japan.

2. TV Tokyo is the studio that airs Bleach and they air it in 1080p actually. Years ago when Bleach first came out it was aired at DVD quality, but now TV Tokyo airs Bleach at a resolution of 1440x1080. All of there other shows are in 1080p as well.

I have direct access to the technical information about the source videos for any given video on the site. For Bleach and many of the latest shows, we receive a 1080P source video from the production company. So we do not up-scale the videos but it's possible that the production company put it through their own post-production up-scaling before giving the video to us. That's something we have no control over so we purely look at it from a technical standpoint and provide 720P since we received a source video that was 720P or higher. Also, our 720P streams are higher bittrates so you will notice a quality difference between our 480P and 720P streams for Bleach. Also, no one is forcing you to watch it in 720P. If you believe you only need 480P, watch it in 480P. The choice is yours!

So, any plans on offering a 1080p option for titles that CR recieves a 1080p source for?
