But then again, confidence and skills are different things...

Bats and sticks are clumsy weapons of limited mobility and usage. The average person wouldn't use either in an effective manner making them more of a hindrance than an advantage against an experienced and trained fighter.

This thread is chuck full of 12-16 year olds or computer geeks discussing the outcome of something on pure speculation or very limited experience and observation.

I'm not sure whether you're referring to me, but i have a brown belt in karate and i'm a second dan of taekwondo. My best friend studies arnis (a Filipino martial art that uses wooden sticks), and i have a hard time with him. Please take your false assumptions somewhere where you won't get hurt if you find out you're wrong.

Now back to the topic...
I got a question. Do you guys think it's faster to learn using repetitive training like in karate or by fighting real fights?

Sweet mock fighting with a friend. By sticks its generally assumed you're referring to something the length of a baseball bat. Beyond that in my quote you'll notice I said, "the average person." Someone trained in Arnis wouldn't be considered your average person would they? As for your training a black belt is basically a sign that you've taken a martial art for a time period longer than 5 years. Beyond that Tae Kwon Do is one of the least effective combative martial arts today. You're also 15 which means you're not fully developed and lack experience. You also assumed I have no experience.

A good experienced street-fighter in my mind can probably take any blackbelt. I remember when my brother did it. We were visiting a half-brother at a dojo one of the blackbelts walked up to my brother and asked him,
"Hey, your thomas's brother right? He says you know how to street fight"
"Yeah, I do"
From there you know the guy was dissing him, and it degenerated down into,
"Well com'on, I bet you can't knock me down"
So the little punk drops in a fighting stance and waits. Brother grabs him, pulls him forward, ignores the struggling, knees the guy in the nuts and then bodily throws him about 4 feet to the floor.
Great stuff.

i think if u study any martial art for only a couple yrs, you're at a disadvantage in a real fight... because u try to fight with skills you dont have yet. usually kids who get into fights before mastering a technique, they either forget their training and brawl at the same level as an average joe.. or they freeze up and move unnaturally because they try to imitate their instructor's style and have to pause to think about what to do in every situation. and by then, they'll be on the ground...

and depends on wut kinda martial arts instructor u have and wut style u learn too... my wing chun master used to take his disciples out to the streets to pick random fights as part of their training. so i guess if u really wanna be a good fighter, u try to get the best of both worlds... real fight experience on the streets, and skill development thru training. i hear thats how bruce lee used to train as well..

Sorry if it appeared that way. But for mock fighting a broken wrist is a big thing. Yeah, i got a broken wrist because i told him to take it seriously, and it took 6 weeks to heal. And yeah, Taekwondo is pretty useless against sticks, so i actually just used karate and the aikido i learned from my dad. And arnis sticks are usually 2 feet in length and can be made from woods like bamboo, up to wood like kamagong, which is rumored to be as hard as iron. And in my last last post, i also said it depends on who he's up against, not the average person.

The Jedi would win...
jedi mind trick.. .super cool moves... force blows... force choke... force lightning... forcet his force that... lightsaber blows.. an jedi taijitsu?
:P

oh! wizard would so kick a@@ useing just illusions... those things are horrible genjutsu you could just freka the poerson out messing everything up giveing thiem freaky hallucinations...

space alian.... well... i dont know

those seti mystiques could do genjutsu proly... ive heard they can do illusions too.... plus other things... basicly anyone that can cause people to see illusions is at a huge base advantage and will drive the perosn to submisision or caus them to hurt themselvfs to unconcsiousness...

as for this .... i think that Jet Li could pawn .... i dont know... JET LI AND JACKIE CHAN vs ARNOLD SCHARZENEGER AND THE ROCK ... who would win?? maybe Jacki an jet li are really ninjas with ninjitsu techniques!? i dont know

street vs martial arts.... martial arts is about skill and learning knowledgable stuff passed on through generations of ... wel basicly the original streetfighters from centurys ago... ehh...

the main thing is alota martial artists are gona be geek/nerd/preppie not always but... while street fighters are tending to be barbarians and punks... well steriotipicly this is what it comes down to...

as for who wins? martial artists tend to be less psychotic... they fight by rules and there by if theyve survived long enough.... they may just ignore that part.... i dont know who wins

well i fink it matters about yourself and not about how u fight. u need a good chin, fast reaction and a steady heart then u will be all set. << i know from personal experience xD

if you're talking about your average person, i guess street fighters would have an advantage cause they got more experience in a real fight rather than just sparring, but if you're talking about really good street fighters vs. really good martial artists, i'd have to go with the martial arts. Look at Pride fighting for example
