Many anime fans would answer: no, Slice of Life has only one true King, Azumanga Daioh

Ever since AzuDaioh colonized the genre, slice of life anime have multiplied. Lucky Star, Hyakko, K-on, Pani Poni Dash, Aria, blah, blah blah...

This season (Spring 2011), there's Nichijou and A Channel.

But do you think that slice of life has been a genre that's improved with time, or does Azumanga Daioh reign still?

how many of those shows will get past a 1st season. Azumanga daioh had 2 "26 episodes total". Also answer me this are they ever going to show any of the girls graduating high school like in azumanga daoh.? to me that's kinda essential to have a good closure with no reason to milk the series. Now before you comment on this I have seen and love both and having a blast watching them but I just have the feeling that I will not re-watch them like i do ever year with well you know.

Haven't watched Azumanga Daioh but I think I have a general idea of it.

I'm going to say that... In some years, slife of life has improved, while in other years, it remains the same.

I think shows Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Aria both are improvements on Slife of Life.

Its hard to make improvements to the slice of life genre and I wouldn't say theres any particular anime that is king of the genre although Azumanga Daioh is one of the first and best of the genre. Most animes of the genre have their own little quirks that make them unique though. Aria is certainly unique compared to other slice of life animes as it does probably one of the best jobs of fleshing out its setting compared to any other anime I've seen

I love my Azumanga, excluding the first five episodes that I repeatedly watched for two years.

Azumanga certainly set the standard and I watched it not long ago and it still holds up really really well. I'm also a fan of Genshiken which goes into more detail about otakus, and the series can be really funny and sweet at the same time. I also really liked BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad because it really captures the fun of playing music and being in a band. Even Wandering Son does a good job of portraying the longing to belong and be who you are no matter how awkward things get.

I have to say, I just watched the fourth episode of Nichijou and I want to retract my "youre doing it wrong" poster. Nichijou is a strange little bag of mixed nuts. Its randomness it somewhat admirable in the first couple episodes but once you get used to it, you realize it's a gem. Also, I don't remember laughing outloud when I watch AzuDaioh, and I have watching Nichijou.

Not that I'm saying Nichijou is genius work, but maybe they're not doing it wrong.

By the way, feel free to post "you're doing it wrong" posters with anime you feel don't live up.

I've never met a "slice of life" anime that I didn't like, but Azumanga Daioh was the first one that I watched. I won't say that it is my favorite - I could never pick a favorite! - but it is certainly one that I remember the most.

First off. Azumanga is a Slice of Life COMEDY. Therefore you list other Slice of life COMEDIES. Like Hanasaku wouldnt qualify on the same terms with Azumanga due to it being a Pure Slice of Life

Nichijou is much funnier than what Azumanga was. By far.

I loved Azumanga Daoih, a lot. And it probably did indeed start the Slice of Life anime's off.

However there have been plenty of animes which I believe have surpassed Azumanga in the Comedy department.

Nichijou, Ichigo Mashimaro are definitely ones that I believe surpass Azumanga Daioh. Probably Pani Poni Dash as well. Hell, even Lucky Star (Though Azumanga would indeed be much more casual friendly)

So I say that Azumanga has been replaced countless times.

And on a random note: Every single Slice of life Comedy anime that I have seen has turned out to be a great watch. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.

Also, Azumanga Daoih is the LEAST likely Slice of life Comedy anime that I would want to rewatch out of all the comedy slice of lifes there have been. I mean it had pretty standard slapstick comedy, which was awesome, however other slice of life comedies have simply evolved that concept to other levels imo.

But regardless, it would be impossible to forget about Azumanga Daioh

slice of life type animes for me is just generally boring I know there are many slice of life animes but the ones I want to point out are the slice of life/comedy ones...they stories aren't interesting at all then they try and make everyone look all young and cutesy but it's not working at all

Like I said, Azumanga has aged really well whether you compare it to other comedy anime or not. I think Azumanga uses more subtle comedy than a lot of other 'slice of life' that have come after it. It's not tailored to a specific audience like Lucky Star is or as laugh out loud as some other comedies, but it was the first to really point out all the ridiculous little things we think and talk about and one of the first anime I remember as being really care free. I personally like the strange and absurd little bits, Chiyo's dad being a big yellow cat, they threw in every few episodes or so too.

I support superluccix's claims in the newsletter itself! ( http://www.crunchyroll.com/newsletter/2011/04/25/exclusive-ovz-contest-nichijou-and-hanasaku-slice-life-bill-156-death-of-anime?src=newsletter_20110425#1498 )

If there's one anime that has the potential to surpass Azumanga Daioh, it's Nichijou.
