Japan to continue anti-terrorism efforts

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto says the death of Osama bin Laden marks progress in the global anti-terror effort.

Speaking to reporters in Paris, Matsumoto referred to the death of bin Laden as the result of years of united efforts by the United States and other countries to prevent and eradicate international terrorism. He also said he welcomes the development as remarkable progress in the anti-terror effort.

He said bin Laden's death may have been confirmed but that this does not mean Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups have been eradicated. He said attacks continue in various parts of the world and that terrorism remains a serious threat.

He said the international community needs to work closely in its sustained effort to overcome terrorism. He said Japan will make its own active contribution as a member of the international community.

24 Japanese were among those who died in the 2001 September 11th attacks, which were allegedly masterminded by Osama bin Laden.

Matsumoto also said Japan will continue to support Afghanistan's reconstruction.

Japan has pledged up to 5 billion dollars in humanitarian and reconstruction aid for Afghanistan to help keep the country from becoming a center for terrorist activities. Early last year, Japan ended an 8-year refueling mission for US-led foreign vessels in the Indian Ocean engaged in the operation in Afghanistan.
