Post Reply Anime for mature adults and I don't mean hentai or the likes

Hey, SkipRat

You should watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Pretty mature enough, not extreme violence or swearing, but it just treats the viewer like an adult. No stupid fanservice, or silly harem or cutesy school girls with high pitched voices, this is pretty epic stuff.

Indeed. He needs to relearn the demographics of anime.

And Lain is not that old. For some reason, in my mind, an older anime series is something before Evangelion or Kenshin and the early 1990s with the advent of newer technologies.

I would assume he meant "at first glance". Show someone that is new to anime only an image of characters from the show and see what age group they assume it is for.

As for the "VERY old" remark, keep in mind age. I expect to most people 15 years old, an anime that came out when they were 2 seems positively ancient. In other topics, I've seen persons around that age list anime from only 5 years ago as "old" anime.

Yep, a lot of 'serious' anime have children as subject matter so I can see how the confusion arises.

I took those facts into consideration and still proceeded with my comments. Though, I must say, I read some of SkylarkAnime's other comments and he seems to be fairly competent.

Ouch... the Skylark is being flamed hard. But that's okay.

For the "very old" remark, i was talking about how it was old, but that is my fault. In my mind, anime that is still in a box and has bad animation graphics and style is old to me (I'm not saying their bad). Evangelion and Kenshin both had a more modern style of animation. Also, I haven't watched any anime from back then other than those three. It's not an age problem, but rather insufficient experience. Recommend me some good ones please. (Note that I only started watching anime around the middle of last year. Although that sounds like and is an excuse.)

As TheAncientOne said, I was talking about how it looks like something aimed at a younger age group. Note the bold: "although it does look like something aimed at younger audiences, if you read deeper, it has very dark and thought provoking themes."

But yes, I admit that I must relearn my demographics. And yes, I do agree that most of this was my fault. Again, Recommend me some good anime before and around about 2000's please. (Anything after 2004 I probably lready know of. 2000 -04 is less certain, and before that is a blank.)

Also,THANK YOU to Kufirst for actually reading some of my textwalls. I didn't think anybody would actually be bothered to.

Don't laugh, I never got to watch this series properly when it was on T.V but I heard CardCaptor Sakura was quite phenomenal in it's reviews and thoughtful. Saying initial appearances can be deceiving goes well with this series.

Expect the unexpected, Sakura. *shot for butcher-dub quote*

Hm, mature anime?
I'm not sure, it's difficult on CR. But I've heard Deadman Wonderland is good if you like horror. Not got around to watching it myself yet, though. If crude comedy is something you're interested in though, Panty & Stocking might be worth a go.

I think the creator of the thread is asking for anime with mature thought processes, with darker themes, e.g. Deathnote, rather then Hentai, ecchi, or just plain stupid anime.

EDIT: He defiinitely isn't looking for anything along the lines of both those anime - Read the first post.

And it might also be a good idea to have actually watched something before you comment on or recommend it. Really.

Fail. Just noticed Skiprat put a list of whatever he's watched. And Serial is already there.

EDIT: I REALLY have to read further back through the posts.

@Skiprat - I again Highly recommend Welcome to the NHK.

Paranoia Agent and Kino's Journey are my favorites. Both left me thinking even after watching them. Wish they made more shows like those.

These were the first two that came to my mind also when looking at the list of things that you've seen. I'd definitely go with both of these.

I highly recommend Monster, characters for the most part are adults for once, like ZOMG impossible!?! The characters are complex, and entertaining to watch. Most importantly the psychological aspect puts Death Note to shame.

I am 36 and been watching anime for 23 years so I have seen a lot of anime and my options are running low.

What I am after is deep slow and thought provoking anime for the more mature and serious of mind, something specifically aim towards adults that I can sink my teeth into and enjoy. As quite frankly the UK listing for anime on crunchyroll is pretty dire and pitiful at best.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Thanks for all the suggestions but I thikn it is better I make of list of what I have seen, so people dont waste their time thinking about stuff only for me to know it is already great.

On that line of thought, "Welcome to the NHK" (NHK ni Youkoso). Again, it seems to be aimed at younger audiences, but it has very dark themes throughout the anime/manga/light novel (each one is darker then the one before, because it had to be tuned down for younger audience). I mean, it's about an Adult Hikikomori (look up if you don't understand - very important if watching anime) who wonders what went wrong in his life wants to start changing.

Bullshit. Serial Experiments Lain never looked like something aimed at younger audiences. Ever.

It isn't, this is why many critics consider this as an alternative anime. I've watched the entire series and it's full of hidden meanings that some I didn't even understand. In fact, the theme of the anime is so deep that you need basic knowledge of some field of science and philosophy to thoroughly understand the story.
