This thread is old as dirt, but it's given me some ideas so thanks everyone.

I didn't see "Now and then here and there" mentioned. It's very good, deep fairly dark and twisted.

This thread is basically everything before 2000 =].
Anyway Fate/Zero is arguably one of the best anime out there made by studio ufotable arguably one of the best animators out there (must watch imo) The Unlimited: Hyobu Kyousuke is pretty dark themed based off of Zettai Karen Children told from one of the main Protagonists POV. Kara no Kyoukai (Boundary of Emptiness in english, cheery huh) also made by ufotable though this is more like a movie series 7 eps all around 1-2 hours in length each, really amazing anime/movie/ova thing.

Have you tried the Aoi Bungaku series? (Excuse me if someone already did).
It's a 12-episode show covering 5-6 classic Japanese literature, and different directors for each novel. I really recommend this, or at least watch the first 4 episodes.

I am looking for a series with adult protagonists (teens don't interest me). Now I would prefer a series with a sort of "gray/neutral" tone so it's not a melodrama nor pretty little fairies either. I heard Solty Rei might fit the bill, any other suggestions?

I have a list somewhere on this thread, may not be what you're looking for exactly, but I could have some ones you may be interested in. Personally with the whole "teens don't interest me" thing, you can miss out on a whole bunch of great stories that way - just because it has teenagers in the story doesn't mean it isn't "mature" or "dark" (or insert whatever word you wish). There is also an anime list on my profile, not a complete one, but it has lots of interesting titles (all of them I've seen, but like I said it's not a complete list, so thus it's not everything I've seen).

Kara no Kyoukai is Garden of Sinners in English (the more official title). It is a seven part movie series with an ova ending episode.

Monster. It is very mature and has a great message to it. It's about 74 episodes, but it is WELL worth it.

I am 36 and been watching anime for 23 years so I have seen a lot of anime and my options are running low.

What I am after is deep slow and thought provoking anime for the more mature and serious of mind, something specifically aim towards adults that I can sink my teeth into and enjoy. As quite frankly the UK listing for anime on crunchyroll is pretty dire and pitiful at best.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Thanks for all the suggestions but I thikn it is better I make of list of what I have seen, so people dont waste their time thinking about stuff only for me to know it is already great.

SEEN
Akira
Blue Gender
Serial Experiment Lain
Dennou Coil
Planates
Vandred
Cleymore
Full Metal Panic
Haibane Renmei
Texnolyze
Ghost In the Shell 1 + 2, SAC
Wings of Honneamise
The Venus Wars
A Wind Named Amnesia
Voices of a Distant Star
Black Lagoon
Elfen Lied
Evangelion
Mushishi
Witch Hunter Robin
Ergo Proxy
Kaiba
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Time of Eve
Darker than Black Season 1 & 2
Full Metal Alchemist

are these all you have watched in 23 years or just the ones you liked the most lol?

ive only just become a die hard anime fan in the past 14 months.. and within those months ive watched probably around 100 anime titles lol.. in 23 years ill probably be at 1000 heh.

but then again i love nearly all anime.. the actions, the adventures, fantasy, ecchi, dramatic, mecha, the romantic and the heart breaking.

i love it all :3

Hi,I'm 17 years old and the funny thing is that the search for 17+ anime (not hentai) brought me here.I've read your com and I needed to give you some anime to watch. Now,I didn't read all the other coms so I may give you something that someone else already did.
So here's a list of good 17+ animes:
Mirai Nikki
Aoi Bunkaku
Baccano
Durarara!
Kara no kyoukai (My favorite anime of all time)
Another
Nana (AWESOME)
Mushishi
Monster
Steines;Gate
Code Geass
Death Note
Fate Zero
Sword art Online (this is not 17+ but it's freacking awesome)
Samurai Champloo
Karas (I'm at episode 3 and it's not that good, but who knows, you may like it)
Beck (contain a little sex scene (not as a hentai),and lots of swearing)
Gosick (at first I thought it's for childrens, but as the plot goes on it more of an 17+ anime then a 13 anime)
Higurashi (I hate it but it's a 17+ anime)
Phantom:Requiem for the phantom
Btooom
Eden of East
HOTD
FLCL
Well I can think of a lot more but I need to search for 1 that I didn't seen yet so I don't have time to think of more right now,so I hope those ones keep you busy for at least a week.

Alright, here's a list for ya!

Btooom!
Another
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni
Shin Sekai Yori: From the New World
Summer Wars
Anohana
We Without Wings
Xamd
Kokoro Connect

This should start you off well, but remember to take a break and watch something fun or random, like Nichijou or something. To much serious stuff is a downer. Also, my personal 'high-score recommendations' are Btooom!, Another and Shin Sekai Yori. These three are some of the best anime I've seen in my tenure (I've seen over 150 different anime over a 6 or 7 year run). Happy watching
