I thought to start a thread on this coz i have a question.

Does anyone have vista? if so tell me what you think about it coz im building a new pc .....n thinking of installing it...

and also...does electricity have anything to do with pc completely shutdown turning on by itself ? coz my computer has done it to me trice and its kinda creepy...

the possible reasons that ive thought so far was that.... it could be my modem detected a pulse or friction of electricity? but to me those idea is kinda implausible...

anyone have thoughts on that?....

lol, i was thinking about starting this thread a few days ago

neway i have another really old and crappy computer, which would occasionally just restart by itself. Other times it just shuts down...
I dunno why but everytime i take the power cable out and put it back in it'll work again.

Also i have Question aswell :

I've partitioned my drive into two drives (C & E). C for system files only and E for all the other stuff.

If i get some crappy virus like say the 'Blue Screen of Death' and i reformat C drive, would all my programs and data in E still work????

1 I would wait on installing vista as there are still issues to be worked out with a lot of companies as far as drivers for devices and some pieces of software are concerned, I would stick with xp for the time being (you can always upgrade later)

2 check you cmos settings to make sure you don't have anything like wake-on-lan or wake-on-modem enabled, this is what is likely causing your pc to 'randomly' start up

Yes, everything on E would be fine (assuming you haven't gone and screwed up your mbr). doing things this way is actually a good practice to prevent data loss in such a situation. The computer systems at my workplace even go as far as relocating the entire documents and settings hierarchy to a second partition, so that should something go wrong with windows, only the system partition need be restored and the computer would work just as before.

Awesome, but one thing

i have all my programs on E and if i format, wouldn't the registry become messed up?
If that happens, the programs won't work will they?

In this case it depends on the program. Some will still work as they will just recreate registry keys, but others (many of which also install critical program components to the system folder on the C drive) won't. Still, it makes things a bit less painless in case something bad happens

your power supply may be going, or , your cpu may have voltage regulation issues.

i need you to describe the problem a little more clearly before i can give you an answer for certain.

is it just randomly rebooting, or is it off, and boots on its own?

yes , but some of the programs might not work correctly without the registry entries they made when installed .

Is your computer a e machine? I have the same problem and it blew out one power supply so i took it to best buy and gave it there geek squad. Since it was under warrinty. They replaced the power supply and said nothing else was wrong with it. Altough they left the heat skin off my procerser so i reattached and it fixed the problem, but now i am haveing the same problem again. I have no idea wtf it is. It really pisses me off.

Also when my boots down its almost like the power supply blows out. Then if flep the power switch on my power strip it will work again. So like gev said i would like to hear more details about your problem it might help me frigure mine out.

1 it could be your mobo or your cpu have votage regulation problems
2 the psu could be too small

first though , chech to make sure the power supply is pulling the right load . there is a little red switch in the back, near where your power cord goes into the psu , this should be labled 115 and 230 . It will only show the number for its current seting , and should be on 115.
