To be clear, by side characters I don't mean Katsura, Madao, Sacchan or other popular ones that are not featured much sometimes, but people who appeared just once or for a very few episodes.

Some examples:
Takatin, Eromes (girl with cat ears and "almost" Shinpachi's girlfriend), Kuriko (Matsudaira's daughter who has a crush on Hijikata), the pen pal sisters (would be good to see if the oldest is still writing to Shinpachi, while the younger might have a huge crush on Okita and I'd love to see Kagura's reaction to that...), the twins who have the small version of Sadaharu (one of them works with Otae and they're rivals. Would be great to have more episodes like the one when they were set against each other at the bar), the swordsmith girl from Benizakura arc, the fire fighter girl, Noriko (the wind girl), the boy from the radio exercises episode (him and Kagura were so cute) just to name a few.

Lots of them might not be considered important enough, but some could have great potential and might turn out even more interesting than other characters who get featured more.

I would like to see the Hard Boiled Detective back on the show again, 'cos y'know, he's hard boiled and all. 8D

I think I don't mind seeing Takatin again either. Preferably at a time when he's not having any toilet-related urgencies. (Maybe more French bread jokes instead?) 8D

I liked the sister of the Shogun, what was her name again... Soyo-hime?
I really would like to see her again.

Oh, and Santa & his reindeer!

You mean the princess who became friend with Kagura and started to eat sukonbu after. She was nice. Also I forgot the girl from the second-hand shop, she's cool too.

Yes that's the one I meant.
The girl form the second-hand shop where Gin-san tried to buy a senpuki? And ended up protecting (or more accurately destroying) this treasure Maneki Neko?

Yes that's her. She also appears during the Benizakura Arc, but she's unnamed.
