Crunchyroll Android App Video Quality Issue

I have both iOS(iPod touch) and Android(Samsung Captivate) devices and both of them are installed with latest crunchyroll app. However, I noticed that the video quality on my iPod touch is way better than the one on android app. I understand that the iPod touch has higher resolution on its screen but I think that's not the reason.

I tried some 720P H264 video on the android phone and they turns out to be great.

Also, I tried the app on an android tablet (running Android 3.0). Seems like the app is simply the same one as the one on the phone, which makes the UI kinda weird. More importantly, the video quality was horrible on the tablet (which finally prevented me from buying it...)

Can anyone tell me what did I do wrong or it is supposed to be like that?? I paid for 720 videos while those ones on android app apparently don't have the quality.

Thanks. I really enjoy watching the anime on iPod and my computer. They looks great.

Higher quality video has yet to be added to the Android app so only the lowest quality is available until we add in support for higher qualities.

Is there an ETA on when the Android Crunchyroll app will support higher qualities?

Bump. I am also really interested about this. Currently thinking about subscribing but the android app quality is a big problem for me. So any ETA?

I have no concrete ETA but I think it's going to be added in within a months time.

Unbelievable. The sole reason why I upgraded to Premium was to have HD anime on my Android device (Galaxy S2). Extremely disappointed by this.

EDIT:

Just remembered that my glorious Android phone can play 720p Flash like a champ. Thank You Google/Samsung/Adobe for making this possible and may CR suck a big fat one for giving Android users such questionable quality of trickery with that thing they consider an "app" (Yes CR, I'm VERY pissed off).

I agree with everyone else I'm afraid. My iPhone 4 runs it beautifully however my Droid tablet displays everything horribly pixelated. I'm forced to choose between a small high quality screen, or a large poor quality one. When I saw an update for CR today I was hoping this had been addressed; turns out it was only bug fixes.

CR, I get that you need to burn dev cycles on building in more streams in to the Droid app, however you're burning your end users who are paying you a monthly fee just because they're not part of the Apple base.

Honestly, if you can stream HD on an iPad, you should be able to figure out doing the same for Android.

I should also note that at A-Kon, where I was sold on CR, I was told it works on "any Android or Apple device". Part of it's allure was availability agnostic of platform. If I had been told it works on any Android device but it looks terrible however it streams like a champ on Apple iOS devices, I might not have been as quick to sign up.

My 0.02.

I agree having hd streams in the app is an option needed...in the meantime, for hd streams why not just watch streams in your phone/tablet web browser...same way you would on desktop/laptop.....?

The idea of having an app to handle what may appear to be meanial tasks actually works. It works extremely well in fact. Streamlined interfaces in the form of a small program is why apps ans tablets sell.

Again, Android tabs are on the rise CR staff. I hope this is fixed soon since as this is the only thing that prevents me from subscribing.

Has there been any progress on this issue? It is possible to use Flash in conjunction with the normal browser, but this in not an ideal soloution. I am beginning to reconsider my subscription due to the support I am receiving on 2 of my 3 devices...

Whine whine whine eh? I'm an avid droid user myself. Apple is easy to develop for, because they only have a few formats. . .iPad, iPhone, etc. etc. Whereas since Droid is open source, there are a multitude of variables to compensate for. You're not just talking about one or three hardware platforms. . .you're talking about a multitude of hardware (not to mention software revs of the DROID OS) to try and wade through. If you read the forum posts. . .they are telling us what's going on. At this point, they're looking at the authoring tools for DRM. . .which is quite literally a mess with the many varied platforms of the Droid base.

I for one appreciate the feedback, and updates that we are given. They could leave us in the dark, or not even try to support the droid platform. . .Think about that, the next time you're planning no prattling on like a spoiled brat. . .

we are dealing with people that want things handed to them so yeah they are going to whine, I have apple ios only as of now but I a want an android tablet pc unlike most I'm not a loyalist junkie however if the people here want a simpler solution... get a 42hdtv, get a 10ft hdmi cable, hook it up to your pc/mac desktop/laptop and then wow people it's nothing, you have had anime all the time from your pc or mac

It's a DRM issue. Froyo and Gongerbread don't support DRM media. Honeycomb supports it but not all Tablets are running Honeycomb. BazouKazuma has said they are working on updating the app for Homeycomb support which should allow for higher quality videos on tablets running Honeycomb.

Also, once phones start running Ice Cream Sandwich CR can update their app with higher quality videos as Ice Cream Sandwich has DRM support.

It's not that CR is being lazy and don't want to offer higher quality videos, it's because since all Android phones and most Android tablets don't support DRM protected streaming, CR can't offer high quality videos because DRM is a requirement of the content providers for streaming high quality videos. Just be glad that the content providers are allowing low quality streaming videos without DRM protection, they could have easily said no.
