What is the best Yugioh series for you?
Posted 5/15/11
Simple question.

Original, GX or 5D's. I will not put Zexal since it is still beginning to air.

For me? 5D's is so far the best Yugioh series.

To the original: Since DM starts the franchise, people expect it to be the best, not considering flaws from it and instead, using it as baseline for comparing it with the other series, judging what is the best series. This is not really a logical reason to point out that DM was the best because it is the original and nothing beats the original and so on. DM got flaws too. DM, as we all know, a lot of episodes, although I feel like there are so many unnecessary arcs that doesn't even touch any character or plot-line. Example is the Virtual world. The state of every(and I mean EVERY) character before they enter the arc and after the arc ends didn't change. Thus, like it's just useless to make that arc anymore, just to say they shouldn't have introduced Noah and just left Gozaburo's situation intact, as the whole arc never touched the series. After knowing Noah, Kaiba's character didn't even developed. In fact, no one did.
The next thing(and is the biggest letdown in my opinion) is the presence of exaggerated cards like gods and those legendary dragons. I mean the duels are becoming less exciting when you know the protagonist possesses those cards which will definitely make them invincible to opponent with such less effort and preparations. And just as when I was glad that Yami lost those cards during the "Waking the Dragons" arc, he got his hand over yet another exaggerated monster in the form of the legendary dragons. Seriously, as long as I know the protagonist has those cards, I definitely don't like the duel anymore and I will just wait on how the opponent will take the gods down, only to be disappointed that the didn't or they can't, with just a very very very few exceptions. And did I ever mention that I didn't like the "dawn of the duel" arc? I mean come on! The title is "dawn of duel" yet no duel is occurring, except maybe that Bakura vs Yugi one. Wow. People complain about duels on motorcycles yet I think no duels and purging monsters all around is much worse. The story behind Yami is interesting but they ruined the very concept of the anime: duels. Not to say DM sucks but for me, it's not really the best.

To GX: People tend to say GX sucks due to the existence of Judai, a fun-loving and cheerful character which people claim to be "immature", cause Yami was cool and quite type. Geez! Duh! WTF! People react to it like sh**. As far as I'm concern, GX was actually good and it renewed everything in Yugioh. Sadly, the case is that GX's true plot starts in season 3. But watching season 1 and 2 is also essential as to characters introduced there are very important. It's so stupid not to watch the beginning of the anime anyway, don't you think? Another thing that you will notice when you finish season 1 is that the world of GX seems to be so small, limiting to events of Duel Academy and people see the characters of GX as "inferior" to DM because they are just students. Well, anyway, the world of GX goes broader as time pass. People also gets easily bored in GX because by watching it , you don't see any story progress until you get to season 3. That's why people tend to get bored and stops watching GX at all. Also, there are some of the most hilarious thing s in there, like how Seto, Pegasus and Solomon's looks didn't change after 10 years, how Pegasus was far more concerned about the Duel Academy than Seto who actually owns it, some Duel Dojos which I don't f***ing know why they practicing on how to draw a card from a duel disk, Seto's insane idea of launching cards into space to teach aliens how to duel(WTF!) and more.
But one thing so good about GX is that the duels are sooo badass! These duels doesn't really involve highly exaggerated cards like gods or dragons. If there are powerful cards, the preparations are high and the duels are great, that I have to say GX is better than DM when it comes to the quality of duels. Another thing is that as season 2 doesn't really have anything special in it, season 3 enlightens the plot when Yubel comes down, threatens everyone in the academy and demands Judai to love her for eternity, as Yubel and Judai's past also is revealed to have relationship with the events from season 2, thus leaving all seasons in GX interconnected, unlike that of DM. And season 4 is also good as Judai becomes more "matured" in terms of handling paranormal events, and he's also cool while talking through a mobile phone(Lol. Something happens, Judai comes, Judai saves the day, Judai picks the mobile phone and talks like badass!). Also, Judai + Motocycle = Badass!

To 5D's: Duels on motorcycle! Next thing we know, all across the net, you see posted comments spanning from "WTF" to "I'm not gonna watch it!". Then after 5D's ends, you'll see, all across the net, posted comments spanning from "It's really good!" to "Bring back 5D's!". OH COME ON!!!
Disregarding the new riding duel mechanics, I was hooked up by the starting plot concept of the series; A destructed city, a discrimination issue upon it's dwellers and the starting characters being rats in a cave, running away from the mighty! I mean it really increased my attention when I feel like this is a fresh and awesome start to the series. Although I have to admit that riding duels confused me at the beginning, it didn't matter. The storyline was too badass that riding duel didn't turned me off at all. The main issue of 5D's is the riding duel. People goes thinking it sucks and ruins everything. But I think riding duels are a good addition to the series. I give a more "Action packed" feeling the duel rather than watching them stand all day long. The speed theme of riding duel also pumps action to monsters moving around the duel. It doesn't ruin the series. It only gives something new, since casual duels still remains here and there. Disregard Synchro monsters in the flaws. Synchros are definitely a great addition to the Yugioh mechanics. It completely overthrows ritual monsters in terms of reliable usage of monster level in a duel.
However, this comes the first flaw that I observed. 5D's has now Synchros as baseline, so you'll rarely see any fusion summons in the series, and since characters focuses more on swarm strategy, release summon is less often to occur. However, they are still in the series. I think the only thing that's gone is the ritual summon, which if you ask me, is totally useless! Next flaw is the quality of "Futuristic" atmosphere in it. During the first season, the visualization of the future of Neo Domino City is fantastic. During the final season, we get lesser technological quality from it, with almost the only proof of futuristic theme in it are the holograms all around the city. But really now, once you get hooked to the series, you wont notice this. Now in my opinion, the greatest flaw of 5D's is the lack of more character involvement during the final season(Road to Destiny). The majority of duels will come from Crow, Jack and as we all know, Yusei, particularly due to the WRGP.
Now... The reason I picked 5D's is due to a lot of things. First is the observably matured theme. Unlike the previous 2 series, 5D's has a more matured and violent theme in it, also marking the return of a cool protagonist in the form of Yusei. Next thing about 5D's seasons is that it remained focused on the plot in every climatic events of the series. On first, 5D's plot seems to just revolve around Yusei getting his hands over Stardust. Actually, the true plot is the secrets behind the Zero Reverse incident. 5D's gets to there, only there. From the point Yusei gets out of Satellite, to Dark Signers stating events behind Zero Reverse and Yliaster stating actions behind Dark Signers and further more, Zero Reverse. I also feel like 5D's has a more great storyline than the previous 2 and the protagonists has more complex background than the original series. Also, the reason why I like it more is that the duels are simply mind-blowing than the previous 2. The pinches are awesome and the way protagonist gets out are legendary, especially in the final seasons where the enemies are possessing so many powerful and complex cards.

I think 5D's is simply the best out of the 3 and people just don't watch it because of riding duels. But believe me, it's awesome once you get into it.

I say Yu-Gi-Oh GX just because Judai is the least depressing
Other than who the main protagonist is, They're all pretty equal to me

Hower I must say the original is my least favourite with the rules being all over the place, and them taking a children's card game to lengths of GODS and such, it was ridiculous

I liked GX better, since, I don't know, it seemed a lot more "realistic" (wut? xD) and more logical (double wut?)
